Francis Maude, Minister for Cabinet Office, announced the new Cyber First scheme to enhance the UK’s cyber security skills base.

Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office with responsibility for Cyber Security, today (24 March 2015) announced a new Cyber First scheme to enhance the UK’s cyber security skills base and meet the increasing demand of this rapidly growing sector.

Speaking in Parliament, the minister launched a pilot student sponsorship programme called Cyber First. This is aimed at identifying the individuals who have the aptitude to become the next generation of UK cyber security experts. Cyber First will draw on talent from the broadest range of backgrounds to meet the UK’s future national security needs in government or companies involved in national security. It will find those already showing potential for a top career in cyber security through school competitions such as the Cyber Security Challenge Schools Programme and national maths competitions.

Cyber First will offer both financial assistance for those studying relevant science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses at undergraduate level and include work experience with government or UK private sector firms within the field of national security. There is a guarantee of employment upon graduation. GCHQ will run this as a pilot scheme which will provide funding of £4,000 for each of up to 20 student places. It is intended that a full scheme across participating departments, agencies and industry will be implemented in 2016, building on the pilot and lessons learned.

The scheme is based on the Israeli Talpiot scheme which identifies exceptional cyber promise to create a cyber elite force who go on to great careers in government and the private sector. Israel has more high-tech start-ups and a larger venture capital industry per capita than any other country.

The Talipot scheme mentioned in that last paragraph is an ultra elite part of the Israeli Defence Forces. This isn’t elite in the SAS or Navy Seal meaning, this is academically and intellectually ultra elite. But it is still, very much, part of the compulsory military service that most Israelis go through. Somewhere around 50 youngsters are chosen each year for this unit and quite a few will drop out. It’s an intense combination of academic university education and military leadership training combined.

From Wikipedia:

Talpiot program is an elite Israel Defense Forces training program, for recruits who have demonstrated outstanding academic ability in the sciences and leadership potential. Graduates of the Talpiot program pursue double higher education while serving in the army, and then utilize their expertise to further IDF research and development in technological leadership positions.[1][2] The program was inaugurated in 1979.[3]

It’s nice to see the UK Government strongly endorsing this part of the IDF by adopting its methods and aims even if they choose not to mention that it is part of the IDF in this press release.

Yesterday I wrote up the contents of the web site belonging to Chambers Solicitors, the firm of lawyers who act on behalf of George Galloway. Here are some other interesting tidbits about that firm that are worth bearing in mind.

Last July the firm was raided by the West Yorkshire Police and two people were arrested there as reported at the time in Bradford’s local paper, The Telegraph and Argus:

Two people were in custody last night following a police raid at a Bradford solicitors’ office.

They were arrested after police swooped on the business in Grattan Road at about 10am.

West Yorkshire Police have declined to give further details of the investigation, though they say it is an ongoing inquiry into an alleged fraud. The action was orchestrated by the force’s Economic Crime Unit.

Detective Sergeant Gary Ferris said: “This was a pre-planned operation carried out by the Economic Crime Unit in conjunction with Bradford CID and Neighbourhood Policing Teams.”

The UK based legal blog Legal Cheek followed up and asked for comment and got this:

The force today would only say that those two people had been released on police bail. Chambers Solicitors’ senior partner Mohammed Ayub told Legal Cheek this afternoon that he had no comment on the police investigation.

Legal Cheek also seems to be well on top of this story and a good source of real information.

And as if this wasn’t enough bad news for George Galloway, the UK Newspapers are now full of the story of the woman who is to run against him for the Parliamentary seat of Bradford West which Galloway holds at the moment.

The headlines scream that she’s the daughter of a murderer but it’s worth getting past those to understand her story (Daily Telegraph):

A Labour Party candidate has told her extraordinary life story including her mother’s imprisonment for murder and the arranged marriage she was forced into at the age of 15.

Last week, Naz Shah was selected to fight the seat of Bradford West at the forthcoming general election, the town where she grew up in extreme poverty, becoming homeless after her father left her mother for a 16-year-old neighbour when she was six.

She has now told the full story of traumatic childhood, including how she was forced to be a parent to her two sisters after her mother, who had suffered years of abuse at the hands of a local drug dealer, was jailed for his murder.

The full story is in the local Urban Echo paper and they published it on International Womens’ Day. I don’t know a great deal more about this woman, but if she can unseat George Galloway, she’ll be a hero for that reason alone.

Update 13:30: I want to mildly qualify my enthusiasm for Naz Shah above with the following quote from Ben Judah in Table Magazine. He’s writing a huge (and very good so far) exposition on Jew hatred in the UK and in the second part (of five) he has this to say about Bradford and specifically Naz Shah (my emphasis):

Bradford is not much of a place to be a Jew. There are fewer than 300 Jews living in the city and only a handful observant. The city’s one Jewish politician is very quiet about his origins, Orthodox Jews are nervous to walk around in kippot, and even a Jewish funeral has been attacked by marauding Muslim anti-Zionist protesters. Even the candidates bidding to dislodge George Galloway now mimic his pro-Palestinian rhetoric, seeking to outdo each other in their condemnation of Israel. The only party that stands a chance of dislodging him is the Labour Party. I contacted every leading candidate bidding to represent them against George Galloway. Most had websites exhibiting photos of themselves at pro-Palestinian protests. Only two wrote back: One Labor hopeful responded rather bizarrely to my request for an interview on the subject of anti-Semitism with a video and transcript of herself speaking at a pro-Palestinian rally. Another, Naz Shah, a Palestine activist I contacted by Twitter direct message stopped responding when I explained Tablet magazine was a Jewish publication. Shah was finally selected to fight Galloway for Labour from an all-Muslim shortlist. The first candidate selected by Labour withdrew amid accusations Pakistani clan elders were unhappy.

Better Call Talut: The Interesting List Of Galloway’s Lawyers’ Expertise http://www.israellycool.com/2015/03/09/better-call-talut-the-interesting-list-of-galloways-lawyers-expertise/ http://www.israellycool.com/2015/03/09/better-call-talut-the-interesting-list-of-galloways-lawyers-expertise/#comments Mon, 09 Mar 2015 18:58:43 +0000 http://www.israellycool.com/?p=74443 Serious Crime Fraud Solicitors Bradford West Yorkshire Chambers Solicitors landscapeAs Dave wrote a few days ago, George Galloway is on a bit of a legal fishing expedition on Twitter. His lawyer(s) are sending frightening, intimidating demand letters to anyone who even casually re-tweeted an accusation that George Galloway is an antisemite.

So who are the lawyers working for George on this case? All the letters come from a firm called Chambers Solicitors based, unsurprisingly, in George’s home constituency of Bradford. It should be pointed out that Bradford is a city with a high proportion of Muslims and it’s the city Galloway tried to ban Israelis from visiting. Leading to much mirth as Israelis visited and took pictures at Bradford’s various “landmarks” with their passports.

When the good folk at Chambers Solicitors aren’t sending out possibly rule breaking demands for immediate payment of fees from unsuspecting twitter users, what else do they do? Well their website paints an illuminating picture of the kinds of legal problems they help their other clients with.

In the (rather large and detailed) list of serious crime and fraud we have such delightful areas of expertise as Murder, Death by dangerous driving, Immigration offences, Benefit fraud, Money laundering, Firearms offences and many more.

Chambers Solicitors Terrorism listLet’s take a look at the category details of terrorism:

  • Terrorism
  • Preparing for acts of terrorism
  • Membership of a proscribed organisation
  • Fund raising for the purposes of terrorism
  • Money laundering of terrorist property
  • Failing to disclose information which may assist in the preventing an act of terrorism
  • Weapons training for terrorism
  • Proscription of organisations
  • Possession of an article connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism
  • Eliciting, publishing or communicating information about members of armed forces

Now obviously, I’m sure, many of their clients seeking help with these issues were no doubt falsely accused. And it’s right and proper that they be afforded adequate legal help in mounting their defence. Be assured Chambers Solicitors do handle Legal Aid cases where the State will pay for defence if the defendant does not have the means to do so.

On to another area, much in the news these days in the UK. That of predatory sexual offenses against children. The UK is currently swamped with such cases as a simple google search will show (Rochdale child sex grooming: 10 men charged after new police … ; Oxfordshire grooming victims may have totalled 373 children ; Married groomer, 32, jailed for having sex up to 50 times with vulnerable girl, 15 just to pick three).

  • Chambers Solicitors Sexual offences against children listRape of a child under 13

  • Engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child
  • Causing a child to watch a sexual activity
  • Child sex offences committed by children or young persons
  • Arranging or facilitating commission of a child sex offence
  • Meeting a child following sexual grooming
  • Abuse of position of trust: sexual activity with a child
  • Sexual activity with a child family member
  • Sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder impeding choice
  • Paying for sexual services of a child
  • Causing or inciting child prostitution or pornography
  • Sex with an adult relative: penetration
  • Possession of Indecent Images of Children from the Internet or Otherwise
  • Taking, having, permitting, distributing or publishing indecent photographs of children
  • Possession of indecent photograph of children
  • Possession of extreme pornographic images

The other areas of their expertise, like run of the mill murder, manslaughter and paying people to kill are all covered in great depth. So are driving offences (I wonder if they offered help to killer Lord Ahmed after he crashed into a stationary car killing a person, probably while texting at 70 MPH).

Feel free to peruse the full list on their site. Let me know in the comments if you find anything else of note.

But do you know what really made me laugh? In all these lists of things Chambers Solicitors are competent to deal with guess what I can’t find any mention of: libel or defamation. That’s got to tell you something!

And a note about the title of this post. Talut is the Islamic version of the name for first king of a united Kingdom of Israel and Judah. The more well known version is Saul. And if you don’t know the phrase “Better Call Saul” you’ve not watched enough of the US TV series, Breaking Bad.

Updated: It’s been pointed out to me that the lead lawyer for Chambers Solicitors is a Mr Alias Yousaf. He was the defence lawyer for one of the 9 men convicted of scores of sex offences with children in Rochdale back in 2012. He was clearly interested in Twitter way back in 2012.

The solicitor for Adil Khan, one of the convicted men, said an appeal would be lodged.

Alias Yousaf claimed outside court that jury deliberations had been “breached”.

He claimed comments on Twitter by the far-right group Infidels of Great Britain and the leader of the British National Party, Nick Griffin, showed they knew the men would be found guilty before the verdicts were delivered.

Mr Yousaf said: “We are left with no option but to conclude that the confidentiality of the jury’s deliberations must have been breached.”

Another “Walk In The Street As a Jew” Experiment Yields Same Disturbing Results http://www.israellycool.com/2015/03/06/another-walk-in-the-street-as-a-jew-experiment-yields-same-disturbing-results/ http://www.israellycool.com/2015/03/06/another-walk-in-the-street-as-a-jew-experiment-yields-same-disturbing-results/#comments Fri, 06 Mar 2015 14:43:03 +0000 http://www.israellycool.com/?p=74492 Remember those social experiments highlighting the problem of antisemitism in Europe?

Like the time Irish journalist Patrick Reilly donned a kippah for a day in Malmo, Sweden.

And the time Swedish journalist Petter Ljunggren did the same thing.

And Israeli journalist Zvika Klein’s recent walk through neighborhoods of France.

Well, there’s a new such experiment, this time by the Daily Mail’s Jonathan Kalmus. The results are the same.

You Jew’ was the anti-Semitic scream which came from a passing car. My shaken wife tried to explain it away to my seven-year-old daughter as a very large sneeze. They were simply playing in a local park in Manchester a few weeks ago when the incident ripped through what should have been a peaceful and wholesome time for any mother and child.

‘Fight the Jewish scum’ and ‘Jew, Jew, Jew… Run’, were the more vicious threats hurled at me in the past few days, however, when I decided to secretly film and find out whether ‘Jew-hatred’ really is alive and kicking on British streets.

The answer to that question is a resounding and heart-sinking yes.

I took the inspiration from the viral videos of Israeli journalist Zvika Klein, who filmed himself being threatened on the streets of Paris, and Muslim Hamdy Mahisen, who filmed himself getting abuse in Milan.

Zvika walked in Paris for 10 hours, Hamdy in Milan for five. It took me just one minute. One minute of walking one single, busy major street in Manchester before abuse was flung at me.

In 25 minutes on that one single street in Longsight, I was spat at by one man and called ‘a Jew’ multiple times by passers by, even by a young boy walking with his father.
I was just walking in the street testing the effect of being clearly identifiable as a Jew by wearing a small traditional Jewish head covering called a kippah.

In Bradford the situation was more shameful. It took 13 minutes, during which I was stalked by a man who repeatedly took pictures of me. He followed me on foot for five minutes and thirty seconds according to my footage.

There was a shout of ‘you Jew’ at me as I crossed the road to Bradford City Park. Minutes later a man turned his head and yelled ‘fight the Jewish scum’ just behind my back.
Some time later three youths shouted at me across a street repeatedly, ‘You’re a Jew, not a Muslim…Jew, Jew, Jew run!’

I was prepared to walk for hours and expected to get nothing on camera. On Manchester’s curry mile, a haven of mixed cultures and skin colour, it took two-and-half-minutes for a young lad on a bike to ride up to me and shout, ‘You’re a Jew’ in my face. I was left speechless that anti-Semitism is so obvious.

In total, between the two cities I suffered a series of anti-Semitic hate incidents, two more than those in Zvika Klein’s video and achieved in one-tenth of the time here in Britain. What a horrible reality.

Why did I pick Bradford? For a simple reason. Last summer during the height of another Gaza conflict between Israel and Palestinians, 5,000 people, predominantly young Muslim men, gathered for a mass rally in Bradford City Park. The city’s MP, George Galloway, spoke while flanked by two butch men wearing T-shirts emblazoned ‘Palestine’s army you are not alone’.

Jonathan also preemptively deals with those – like anti-Israel scumball Richard Silverstein – who will claim he was “provoking”:

No one could accuse me of targeting Muslim neighbourhoods to provoke a reaction. This was the centre of an ordinary English city and I was minding my own business.

No one could accuse me of wearing something provocative or political. A Jewish person or any peaceful person walking in a British street anywhere, let alone a city centre, should be welcome.

Read the entire thing. If you can stomach it.

Or should I say anti-Zionist? Cough cough.

A prominent, far-right activist who styles himself as a “Nationalist, Fascist and supporter of White Rights” has been arrested following a police investigation into anti-Semitic tweets sent to a Member of Parliament.

Joshua Bonehill’s arrest follows allegations of online abuse aimed at Luciana Berger, Labour MP for Liverpool Wavertree. Ms Berger revealed in December that she had received 2,500 anti-Semitic tweets in just three days.

As of right now the top of the article looks like this:

Just for reference of the Independent’s photo editor’s desk, this is what Joshua looks like (from his twitter feed):

I will agree that Luciana Berger is much prettier and makes your article much more attractive, but perhaps you should note that in the caption under the photo.

Update 18 Feb: Strangely it seems the Independent has fixed the caption but only on the mobile site. The desktop is still giving me the old one.

How To Spot A Jihadist http://www.israellycool.com/2015/02/01/how-to-spot-a-jihadist/ http://www.israellycool.com/2015/02/01/how-to-spot-a-jihadist/#comments Sun, 01 Feb 2015 15:24:21 +0000 http://www.israellycool.com/?p=72972 So how does one spot a jihadist? According to the French government:

How do you spot a radical jihadist? According to the French government, several signs should alert people that “a process of radicalization is underway.” “They” (meaning radicalized individuals):

mistrust old friends, whom they now consider ‘impure’… abruptly change their eating habits … no longer watch television or go to the movies because [these may show] images that are forbidden to them … change their attire, especially women, with clothes that conceal the body … [and] stop listening to music because it distracts them from their ‘mission.’

Oh, and no longer eating baguettes.

The French government provided this handy graphic to get the point across:

jihadi poster

Meanwhile, London mayor Boris Johnson has a different approach.

Boris Johnson has described men who go to fight with Islamic State as “literally wankers” who watch porn because they can’t meet women.

Citing a report from MI5 on the profile of jihadis, the mayor of London said: “If you look at all the psychological profiling about bombers, they typically will look at porn. They are literally wankers. Severe onanists.”

Johnson described British jihadis as “tortured” and “very badly adjusted in their relations with women”, something he said was a symptom of “their feeling of being a failure and that the world is against them”.

“They are not making it with girls and so they turn to other forms of spiritual comfort – which of course is no comfort.”

He continued: “They are just young men in desperate need of self-esteem who do not have a particular mission in life, who feel that they are losers and this thing makes them feel strong – like winners.”

Luckily, he did not provide a graphic.

Must Watch: Baroness Deech Pulls No Punches In Opposing UK Recognition of “Palestine” http://www.israellycool.com/2015/01/30/must-watch-baroness-deech-pulls-no-punches-in-opposing-uk-recognition-of-palestine/ http://www.israellycool.com/2015/01/30/must-watch-baroness-deech-pulls-no-punches-in-opposing-uk-recognition-of-palestine/#comments Fri, 30 Jan 2015 07:33:34 +0000 http://www.israellycool.com/?p=72896 In the latest parliamentary debate in the House of Lords on UK recognition of palestinian statehood, Baroness Deech tells it like it is.

Here is the full transcript of her speech:

Baroness Deech (CB): My Lords, with unfortunate timing, this debate is taking place two days after International Holocaust Remembrance Day. In the 70 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, despite the millions spent on Holocaust education and remembrance, the museums and memorials and the school visits to concentration camps, there is a gap in memory and education that needs to be bridged. The desire and opportunity to murder 6 million people of a different religion whose presence on his territory the murderer resents must not arise again. The message Jews took from the Holocaust was that their nationalism was necessary. It has been a success. Israel is not Saudi Arabia; it is not North Korea, Iran or Pakistan. It is a flourishing and democratic outpost in the desert with an astonishing record. It is a safe haven, an imperative for existence that can be applied to no other country in the world.

Yasser Arafat declared an independent state of Palestine in 1988 and recognition followed from 100 states. The subsequent failure to change anything on the ground demonstrates the truth of the international law on recognition: namely, that statehood has to be founded in fact, not in numbers of recognitions.

As far as this Motion goes, almost every word of it is dubious. There can be no contribution towards a two-state solution because recognition of Palestine, falsely based, will only make the situation more dangerous. There can be no two-state solution unless Palestine recognises Israel, which she has steadfastly refused to do. There is no statehood attaching to Palestine in international law because it does not meet the criteria. A sovereign state of a Muslim Palestine has never existed—not before 1948, and not before 1967. It was Egyptian and Jordanian territory. Ehud Olmert’s offer of a state was rejected in 2009. The intention of many of the players in the region has always been the elimination of a Jewish presence in the area, not the establishment of yet one more Muslim state. The problem with Israel is not that it has displaced anyone; according to its neighbours, the problem is that its population is largely Jewish.

The practical result of a premature state of Palestine would simply be to free up the import of arms into the new state. The aim underlying this move is the takeover of Israel. Why is there no preparation by the Palestinians for statehood? There is no governance structure, no independent administration, no industrialisation and no negotiation of trade agreements with its neighbour, Israel. The state would not be a state in any recognisable form. Its leaders have declared that the current residents, whose status as refugees defies all logic, would remain defined as refugees. They would not be granted citizenship, nor would the state of Palestine open its doors to the Palestinian diaspora—those Palestinians whose miserable lives in Syria, Egypt, Lebanon and elsewhere in the region are worse than the lives of those in Gaza and the West Bank. It has also declared that it would be a Judenrein state, unlike the 1.8 million Arab residents of Israel who have chosen to stay there.

So if a state has no citizens, and will not grant them citizenship in defiance of international law, what would it be for? It would be for a closer jumping-off point for the demolition of the State of Israel in pursuance of the alleged right of return. As other noble Lords have said, Fatah and Hamas want a one-state solution. Why should Israel recognise Palestine if there is no reciprocity but only a step towards elimination in return?

In the climate of extremism that is sweeping Europe, why should a country want to take a step that risks feeding it more? The only purpose is manipulative—to allow Palestinians to pursue claims against Israel at the UN and other international bodies. In the face of what is happening in Europe, what agenda do the proponents serve? Would it not be a good idea to examine the excesses of this position and turn to state building on the ground as an alternative?

Israel’s antagonists often accuse her of apartheid. In the worst times of genuine apartheid in South Africa, Mandela was planning his future independent country’s constitution, educating its leaders, preaching peace, not vengeance, and acting as a statesman. In the early days of Zionism, before statehood, the Jewish residents of what was to be Israel prepared their governance structure, set up the organs of a state, created universities, made the desert bloom, prepared a legal system and a free press, trade unions, hospitals and charities. None of this is present in the Palestinian leadership; nothing is readied. It is not a state under international law, but I have no time to describe that.

The worst element, of course, is that the residents will not be citizens but will be regarded as refugees whose aim is to return to a different state—Israel—rather than establishing citizenship in their own state, and the new state would be wholly dependent on international funds. For it to be recognised now—by the General Assembly, for example—would simply send the message to every other non-state entity in the world, such as the Basque country, Northern Cyprus, the Kurds and even Scotland, to bypass normal laws and claim to be a state. Let there be a two-state solution by all means if the Palestinians will create a homeland, accept the refugees, lay down their arms and be a country of peace.

Maureen Lipman Contemplating Leaving Britain Due To Antisemitism http://www.israellycool.com/2015/01/28/maureen-lipman-contemplating-leaving-britain-due-to-antisemitism/ http://www.israellycool.com/2015/01/28/maureen-lipman-contemplating-leaving-britain-due-to-antisemitism/#comments Wed, 28 Jan 2015 17:46:54 +0000 http://www.israellycool.com/?p=72832 Pro-Israel actress Maureen Lipman is contemplating quitting Britain due to rising antisemitism. And Israel is on the list of potential destinations.

Maureen Lipman has said she is contemplating leaving the UK because of the ‘worrying’ rise of attacks on Jewish people.

Mrs Lipman, 71, said the Jewish community in Britain ‘give, give and give’ and described the recent rise in anti-Semitic attacks as ‘very, very depressing’.

The actress, best known for her 1980s adverts for BT, told LBC Radio: ‘When the economy dries up they turn on the usual suspect the Jew… and when the going gets tough the Jews get packing.’

When asked if she’d considered leaving the UK, Mrs Lipman replied: ‘Yes it’s crossed my mind that it’s time to look around for another place to live.

‘One school of thought says it’s because of Israeli policy in the Middle East, it isn’t. There’s been anti-Semitism for 4,000 years.’

—-

In her interview on LBC, Mrs Lipman continued: ‘I’ve thought about going to New York, I’ve thought about going to Israel. I’ve been talking about this for a long time’

‘My kids are very bored with me…but it’s only in the last few months they’ve said “mum, we think you have a point”.

‘There are 245,000 Jews in the country. [W]hat’s to fear? We don’t fly planes into buildings, we generally keep on the right side of the law.’

Mrs Lipman’s comments add to the growing clamour of voices calling for protection of Jews and an end to anti-Semitic attacks

I hope Maureen comes to live in Israel. I’d like to buy her a cup of tea.
