Israel Bad

You would have thought that after 9/11 and all of the other terrorist attacks occurring in recent times that the world would actually understand Israel’s position more clearly. Wishful thinking! Check out some of these letters from an Australian newspaper today (the Age):

No, I don’t feel any safer

I wish I could say at this stage of the “game”, even with the defeat of Saddam zooming towards us, that I felt safer than a few weeks ago. On the contrary, I feel less safe, and I believe the world is a less safe place now.

Perhaps naively, I wonder what a difference it would have made if our brave “coalition of the willing” had been willing to put even some of the billions this war has and will cost into hospitals, schools and infrastructure in Palestine. This, it seems to me, would have undermined terrorism at what is sometimes claimed to be its root.

Instead, we have chosen to fight fire with fire, we have chosen to confront head on, we have chosen to intensify the upward spiral of violence. Invading another country and pretending that the invading force can put in place an administration that will have any legitimacy is a fantasy.

Arab and Muslim countries have been galvanised, not in gratitude to the invaders, but in deepened hatred and resentment of the presumptuous.

Perilous praise

How could you guarantee that Australia would become a pre-eminent terrorist target after this war? Answer: use our military to protect Israel.

That, it emerges, is exactly what our SAS force’s main task has been – obviously allocated by the sheriff. And while Australian defence officials have been shy about telling us and the world about this – they obviously know the consequences – not so the sheriff. Our good ol’ American buddies announced it to the world at one of their recent press briefings in Qatar.

Yep, those Aussie SAS boys are darn good fighters, we were told patronisingly – they’ve been protecting the Israelis from Iraqi missile attack.

I wrote about this exact phenomenom late last year (click here to read the article). Rabbi Winston has written some excellent essays about the centrality of Israel in terms of current world events and the world’s attitude towards Israel. You should check out his site thirtysix.org.
