Haaretz reports:
Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said Wednesday that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat had personally ordered all of his security forces to aid in efforts to rescue kidnapped Israeli cab driver Eliyahu Gurel, and that over the past three weeks, efforts to curb terrorism had yielded a 99 percent drop in terror attacks against Israelis.
A few things come to mind:
1. Who is leading the palestinians? If it is indeed Arafat, then nothing has changed.
2. Why speak of palestinian efforts to “curb terrorism” when all that has happened is a reduction in terror operations due to a temporary ceasefire? Curbing terrorism involves stopping it and dismantling the terrorist infrastructure, something the palestinians clearly are not doing.
3. Why is Erekat now bragging that the palestinians are trying to curb terror? I do not recall Erekat ever making a similar statement before now, yet the palestinians were supposed to be curbing terrorism since Oslo!
