The two Israelis murdered in yesterday’s suicide bombing were Yechezkel Yekutiel, 43, a repairman from Rosh HaAyin, and Erez Hershkovitz, 18, of Elon Moreh. As I write this, two more people are fighting for their lives.
In the meantime, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (whose name actually means “monkey cloud” in Hebrew) issued a predictably equivocal condemnation of the attack and linked it to Israel’s incursion into the Askar refugee camp, an incursion which would not have been necessary had the Palestinian Authority met its obligations under the road map. A UN spokesman had this to say on Monkey Cloud’s behalf:
“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the current escalation in the violence, including the recent (Israeli) incursion into Askar refugee camp near Nablus and last night’s shooting incidents in the Gaza Strip,” Mr. Annan said in a statement issued by a UN spokesperson. “He urges both parties to adhere to their Road Map obligations and to exercise restraint in the face of provocation.”
Moral equivocation at its finest.
