It seems that us Jews owe Egypt an apology.
In a December 1st article by Hassan Tahsin in Saudi Arabia’s Arab News, the columnist complained that Israel has been attacking Egypt – “the biggest threat to [Israel’s] existence.” – in an assault masterminded by Finance Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. In fact, these attacks include, according to the Saudi column, “…a special [Jewish] prayer every day wishing illness, ruin, death and destruction upon the Egyptians.”
Yes, it is true. We devote hours to our day calling for Egypt’s destruction (I believe that this particular prayer lies immediately after the prayer asking G-d to help us rule the world).
I feel that this prayer was unjustified, and disproportionate to the minor grievances that I have with Egyptians, including:
– Trying to sue the Jews for being slaves in Egypt thousands of years ago
– Displaying the anti-Semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion next to a Torah scroll
– Broadcasting a television series based on the aforementioned Protocols
So please accept my humble apologies.
