The dead soldiers were:
May their families be comforted.
This is what happened:
A column of three vehicles, two armored personnel carriers and a D-9 bulldozer left the Tarmit outlook post on the Philadelphi road near the Palestinian refugee camp in Rafah. The D-9 headed the column in clearing the road for the carriers. They were apparently on their way to blow up tunnels used to smuggle armaments, and so one of the carriers was loaded down with hundreds of kilograms of explosives.
Shortly after leaving Tarmit post, a roadside bomb was set off alongside the column damaging the D-9. As the first APC moved closer to help the D-9, a second explosion followed. As a result of the blast, a chain reaction set off the explosives on the second APC. Witnesses say the blast was so powerful, it resounded for miles and caused a huge mushroom cloud that could be seen far away.
And Ha’aretz are reporting this added detail:
A member of an undisclosed Islamic group told the French news agency that his group is holding the remains of one of the Israeli soldiers, Israel Radio reported.
Let’s hope that this last statement is just talk. But it does underscore the depths of depravity that these terrorists scale. We saw it with the last incident, when they waved the body parts in front of cameras. And we saw it with Nick Berg’s horrific execution.
But it is not just the barbarity that links these latest killings with Nick Berg’s execution. In a strange coincidence, this latest incident has occurred in the “Philadelphia Corridor” of the Gaza Strip, and Nick Berg was from Philadelphia.
Update: Here is more on each of these heroes.

Refuseniks protested near Gaza Following the death of 6 IDF soldiers
Dozens of Courage to Refuse members, many of them veterans of military service in Gaza Strip, demonstrated today, together with bereaved parents, in Kisufim checkpoint, a crossing point from Israel to Gaza.
The demonstration took place following the death of six IDF soldiers yesterday in Gaza, when the shielded vehicle they drove had been hit by an explosive charge set by the Hamas.
The demonstrator protested against the Israeli government’s policy. They called Prime Minister Sharon and Minister of Defense Mofaz to stand behind their proclamation that Gaza Strip is not necessary for Israel’s security, and get the soldiers out of there. “The government must not send soldiers to die in vain” said the protestors.
The demonstrators held signs baring the names of the late soldiers. Regarding the question of demonstrating in such a sad day, in which Israel mourns the soldiers’ death, they said: “Today our voice is more important then ever: we’re demonstrating here and now to prevent any future unnecessary death. We’re here for saving life”.
David Zonsheine, one of Courage to Refuse’s establishers and its chairman, noted that the disastrous event would be a turning point ahead of Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
During the demonstration, the demonstrators approached soldiers from the Givati brigade and said, “We only came to say that we salute you and appreciate you and want to get you out of here as quickly as possible.” The soldiers killed Tuesday were also from Givati.
