How is this for a great idea?
We’ve had it in bottles, flagons and casks – now get ready for wine in cans.
Barokes, a range of wines in 250ml aluminium cans, will go on sale in New South Wales in September for $3.99 each.
Launched in Japan and Taiwan 18 months ago, Barokes canned wine is the brainchild of Melbourne entrepreneurs Greg Stokes and Steve Barics.
Mr Stokes and Mr Barics have been selling bottled wine in Melbourne for 15 years under the Benchmark label.
Brisbane-based Master of Wine, Peter Scudamore-Smith, who is responsible for blending the tipples, said: “This is our version of RDTs (ready to drink).
“We call them RDTWs – ready to drink wines.
“Out in September will be a chardonnay and a cabernet sauvignon/shiraz blend, each available in still and sparkling form.
“They have been a huge success in Japan and are now in over 1000 convenience stores there.”
He said it was planned to increase the line-up soon.
A great idea for the sole reason that this is likely to upset the French, who take their wine very seriously.

A great idea apart from the fact that cabernet sauvignon/shiraz blends are invariably piss. And what is this nonsense of sparkling red wine?!
