Australia sure likes a good cause. You know, like supporting the war and subsequent rebuilding of Iraq… foreign aid…angering the French.
The blockbuster of French impressionist masterworks will open at the National Gallery of Victoria this morning, but already complaints are being heard in Paris that so many great paintings are away on loan.
The senior curator of the Musee d’Orsay, Caroline Mathieu, said that up to 5000 people visited the gallery on the Left Bank of the Seine every day during summer, most of them tourists. “People cannot believe that some of our great paintings such as Manet’s The Balcony, van Gogh’s Starry Night and Cezanne’s The Card Players have left the country,” she said.
G-d bless Australia.
