PM Sharon’s Fight for Life: Day 5

See below for updates.

With Prime Minister Sharon sedated, on a respirator, and remaining in stable but critical condition, doctors at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem plan to review Sharon’s condition, and unless they see a change, will attempt to gradually bring him out of his medically induced coma. And until Sharon regains consciousness, it will be impossible to determine the extent of his brain damage.

The results of trying to awaken Sharon now may vary.

Neurosurgeons said early monday that the extent of Sharon’s responses could vary widely, from slight movements of the fingers or opening of the eyes, to a much fuller awakening. They have also cautioned that there is no guarantee that Sharon will awaken from the anesthesia.

“The patient does not always awaken when we would like,” said Dr. Menashe Zaaroor, head of the neurosurgery department of Rambam hospital in Haifa.

“At times, one stops the [sedation], and the patient wakes immediately, and in other cases it may take him a month to wake up.”

Updates

10:00AM: After assessing Sharon’s condition, doctors have given the final go-ahead to awaken him from the medically-induced coma.

11:45AM: Sharon is breathing on his own after his sedation was reduced, although he remains in critical condition on a respirator.

6:35PM: Some positive signs, as Sharon responded to pain stimulus, with his blood pressure rising during stimulation, and movement in his right arm and right leg.

6:45PM: Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proves that Gorilla boy is not the only Iranian leader who can sprout bovine excrement with the best of them. He had this to say regarding Sharon’s predicament:

“The Americans have been defeated in Palestine since the butcher of the Palestinians, who intended to destroy the Palestinian Intifada, has come to his end.”
