Blogging the Conflict: June 2nd-3rd, 2007

Catching up on the news after a relaxing Sabbath, I see that there seems to have been “only” one Qassam fired at Israel today. It landed in a residential neighborhood of Sderot this morning, damaging 2 buildings, and causing 4 people to suffer shock. Islamic Jihad took responsibility for it, which is not surprising, considering that we turned one of their senior terrorists into worm fodder on Friday evening.

For the second time in two days, IDF troops have reportedly shot 2 palestinians near the border fence with Israel. As was the case yesterday, the palestinians ignored the IDF’s orders to stop, as well as the warning shots. Palestinian sources claim the two were killed, and were not terrorists, but rather workers at a garbage dump near the fence. The IDF also shot a palestinian attempting to attack Israeli soldiers with a large boulder near Ramallah (he was subsequently taken to an Israeli hospital for treatment), as well as a palestinian gunman in Nablus.

In other news, a senior Hamas leader has stated Hamas may consider a one-year cease-fire with Israel (they evidently want a lot of time to replenish their weapons and supplies), a Gaza-based radical Islamist group has threatened to behead female TV broadcasters if they don’t wear strict Islamic dress, and the UAE has transferred $80 million to the palestinians.

  •
8:48AM: To bring you up to speed since my last update….the IDF killed a member of “moderate” Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah in an exchange of fire, and Hamas’ delegation to Egypt has rejected the draft of an initiative for a ceasefire with Israel.
