Israeli News Briefs – October 21st, 2007

  • Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin has revealed that a cell from “moderate” PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah planned to carry out an attack on Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on August 6, en route to the Prime Minister’s meeting with Abbas in Jericho. Some of the suspects were actually meant to guard Olmert’s convoy. In response, palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad ordered that the suspects be rearrested after having been previously arrested and then released. And if that’s not confusing enough, Fatah is denying everything, despite Fayyad’s confirmation of the assassination attempt. Welcome the world of palestinian implausibility.
  • According to Syrian-based website Sham Press, Lebanese Druze leader Walid “Mr Burns” Jumblatt will ask Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak to use his influence in Washington to work toward bringing down the Syrian government. In other news, there’s a Syrian-based website called Sham Press.
  • Israeli archaeologists overseeing a contested dig at Jerusalem’s holiest site for Muslims and Jews have stumbled upon a sealed archaeological level, simultaneously establishing a link to the First Temple, and pissing off the Islamic Trust.
  • The relationship of outspoken Israeli model Bar Refaeli and Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio may very well have sunk like the Titanic. And it looks like she may have moved on to another man of the sea.
