Despite his young ago – or perhaps because of it – the boy simply and concisely explains why terrorists do what they do.

It is almost that simple.
I assume the father said what he did to comfort his child and not because he actually believes it. Because we all need a heck of a lot more than candles and flowers to protect ourselves from this evil.
Flowers and candles are remembrance, guns are for defense.
You will notice that the man and child appear to be of asian origin (would guess Vietnamese), but act totally French, down to a bit of defeatism on the part of the father :-).
Proving that France *can* integrate immigrants 100%. When immigrants WANT to integrate.
