Haaretz Stops Even Trying to Pretend They’re Not a Joke

Today, I noticed Haaterz Haaretz stopped trying to hide their true feelings behind the veneer of pseudo intellectualism and “concern for human rights.”

The newspaper, which is floundering in Israel, is desperate to remain relevant, and has thus been moving from left wing to full out insane in order to attract the vast majority of Europe. The fact that they would even consider publishing this op ed, written by Gideon Levy, whose own son spoke out against him, says it all.

I have no more words.

  1. I had the displeasure of enduring an extremely bigoted anti-Israel “conference”.. complete with full-on terrorism support.. PFLP speaker, BDS activists, JVP, etc…. An attendee asked one of the speaker bigots where they go to find accurate news about Israel, they felt that all regular news services were comprised of “Zionist controlled propaganda”…. the bigoted speaker gave his candid advise: “The only news from the Middle East worth reading is Haaretz”.
    Enough said.

  2. Fortunately, Israelis have many choices on where they get their news. There is Haaretz, left-wing for sure, but you also have the most popular newspaper in the country (maybe because they give it away?), Israel Hayom, which Naftali Bennett has called “Israel’s Pravda” for its unfailingly pro-Netanyahu coverage. Read today’s New York Times to get some idea of how Sheldon Adelson and Bibi Netanyahu himself have eroded freedom of the press in Israel.

If readers don’t like what Israel Hayom has to say, they are under no obligation to add it to their pile of waste paper.

    2. Read the article in the Sunday Times. It’s utter nonsense and indicative of a selective bias in the Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/31/opinion/sunday/how-benjamin-netanyahu-is-crushing-israels-free-press.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FIsrael&action=click&contentCollection=world&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=collection&_r=0

Here’s a similar action in a different sector, banking:

Ideologically the government is taking small steps to encourage competition. It’s a small country and you can’t upset too many apple carts at the same time. Right now the country is rather proud of foreign buyouts – at some point they are going to understand that it’s a problem.

The problem in the media sector is not a lack of competition, it’s the competition from free media, like the one you’re reading, and this is universal.

I stopped reading Haaretz long before it erected a paywall. If I want to read anti-Israeli material, and I do as a reality check from time to time, I’ll take Al-Jazeera or Maan News, Imec, the Guardian, NYT and the like. For reasonably straight coverage I’ll go to the Jerusalem Post, Beirut Star and Washington Post though recently I’ve rediscovered MiddleEast Transparent, which was recommended to me by the late great Barry Rubin.
