ONLY IN ISRAEL (I witnessed both scenes at Ashkelon Bus Station): Today, an elderly man boarding the bus handed the young driver (apologies for the low quality of the picture, the best this paparazza could manage from where I was sitting!) a 50 IS note for a 1:90 fare. “Do you have no small change, sir?” the driver enquired . “No, just that”. “Never mind”, the driver said, handing him the ticket together with his 50 IS note. The old man didn’t understand what was happening and tried to push the 50 IS note back in the driver’s hand. “No, that’s all fine”, the lovely driver said, gently closing the man’s hand on his ticket and his money, “you’ve got your ticket, you take a seat”. (This means the driver covers the money from his own pocket, because he has issued a ticket that needs to be accounted for). (Dan Darom bus no. 2)
This follows last week when a clearly mentally ill woman was searching for the money for her fare as she got on an intercity bus. A young female soldier in uniform must have been watching and felt the woman’s distress. The soldier jumped out of her seat and stuffed a 20 IS note in the driver’s hand. 20 IS (a little over $5) is around 5% of a noncombat soldier’s monthly “salary” in her 2 year mandatory service.
