Eurovision Intrigue

Question: What could possibly make the usually dull* Eurovision song contest more interesting than the threat of Lebanon withdrawing over Israel’s participation?**

Answer: France being represented by an Israeli!

Israeli-born singer Ortal has been chosen to represent France in the upcoming Eurovision song contest in Kiev on the 21st of May.

The 26 year-old Ortal, who moved to France at a young age, has a cross-cultural musical style, which combines rhythm and pop. Her cheery “Chacun pense soi” (Everyone thinks of themselves) will provide France with its first upbeat entry in many years.

The singer has performed with various groups from the age of 16. By participating in the French national final of the Eurovision Song Contest selection, she hoped to reach a wider audience.

Of course, this poses a huge dilemma for the French. Do they support their representative, and thus go against their Jew-hating instincts? Or do they embrace their true selves, vote against her, and thus sabotage their chance of winning?

The intrigue is killing me!

* except for the odd performance by Israeli transsexuals, or bisexuals waving Syrian flags and performing suggestive acts with cucumbers.

** How come whenever Israel and Lebanon are mentioned in the same sentence, the notion of withdrawal is also discussed?

Are you kidding? The French are delighted. Their entrant is a perfect example of the ‘ideal Jew’ – she saw the light and moved to France. What could be a better example of the total lack of anit-semitism and anti-Israeli feeling than the fact that they’re willing to send a Jew/Israeli to the Eurovision whilst at the same time celebrating the fact that this person had to (in their eyes) come to France to succeed.

Let’s not forget that anti-semitism is a very recent phenomenon in France. As recently as 2001 Jacques Chirac declared to the press ‘There Is No Antisemitism In France’.
