Lee Whitnum: Class All The Way
Meet Lee Whitnum, Democrat candidate for Joe Lieberman’s Senate seat.
Democratic candidates for Connecticut’s U.S. Senate seat are questioning whether one of their lesser-known colleagues should be allowed to participate in future debates after she called U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy a “whore” for his support of Israel during a live televised debate on Thursday night.
Murphy, former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, state Rep. William Tong and Matthew Oakes each expressed disgust over the comments made by Lee Whitnum, a vocal critic of U.S. aid to Israel. Whitnum also referred to Tong as “ignorant” during her closing remarks. Tong had defended Murphy at one point in the hour-long debate, sponsored by WVIT-TV.
The five are vying for the party’s endorsement and ultimately to fill the seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent.
Oakes, another lesser known candidate, said he doesn’t believe Whitnum should be allowed to participate in future debates. The next one is scheduled for Monday at the University of Connecticut.
“And I was the one that spoke out loudest about including all the candidates,” he said. “The fact that she just attempted to ruin the good that I was trying to do is offensive to me. … I can’t in all good conscience say, ‘Well include us in the debates, all of us,” if she’s going to be that offensive.”
Tong questioned whether it makes sense to allow Whitnum to continue participating.
“What we want is a productive conversation,” Tong said. “That wasn’t constructive and it wasn’t productive.”
“It’s one thing to have a policy disagreement and clearly we have some,” said Bysiewicz. “But it’s another thing to just get personal and start name calling and that’s not called for.”
Whitnum, an unemployed software engineer from Greenwich, accused Murphy of “drinking the AIPAC Kool-Aid,” referring to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. She said she is the only U.S. Senate candidate who is not pro-Israel and called AIPAC a “cancer in our government.” She questioned why the U.S. was supporting Israel financially, saying “the Jewish community has almost always taken care of its own” and how U.S. taxpayers “have to pay the price for a country that’s not impoverished.”
Murphy defended U.S. support of Israel, saying it is in the country’s national security interest.
“I stand with the U.S./Israeli relationship and I’m willing to defend my position on it,” he said. “It just should be done without name-calling.”
During her closing remarks, Whitnum motioned to Murphy and said, “I’m dealing with whore here, who sells his soul to AIPAC, who will say anything for a job.” She then motioned to Tong and referred to him as “ignorant,” saying her comments have been “twisted to be racist.”
After the debate, Whitnum acknowledged to reporters that she may have come on too strong, saying she “wasn’t really thrilled with the way it turned out.” But she defended her overall stance.
“I don’t talk about religion, I talk about a handful of people, the neoconservatives, who had an Israel-first agenda that is well-documented and to not talk about that is pandering,” she said. “We’ve got to face reality. And you need a politician who’s going to face reality.”
Apparently, she takes exception to being called antisemitic, and gets all litigious.
As for me, I doubt she is antisemitic. I mean, what says “I oppose the Holocaust” more than her Fourth Senate Bill: Stop the gas chambers for our pets?

If I didn’t know better, I would have thought this was a skit from SNL. What a nut! And why exactly is it a bad thing that AIPAC is effectively making the case for Israel with the American Congress?

What a psycho nut job. Hopefully we will see the Democrats of Connecticut avoid the Klan Kool-Aid that this woman has not just drunk till inebriation but is dishing out to the masses.
Does she have specific plans for Connecticut, I mean apart from erecting concentration camps? Typically a Senate candidate is suppose to at least give lip service to something or other going on in the state they’re running to be elected to the Senate seat of.
At least across the pond, George Galloway has the good sense to be Muslim and openly run on a platform strictly in terms of antisemitism but since his constituency is predominately Muslim it’s not supposed to be subtle.
If Whitnum didn’t exist, it might be necessary to invent her in order to expose the lunacy of her brand of radical leftism. Liberalism may not be a mental disorder, as radio motormouth Michael Savage contends, but her radicalism is and can be applied to all her ilk. Her chances to win the Senate seat are virtually zilch outside the Yale campus, as even before Connecticut voters elected Lieberman, they had also elected Honest Abe Ribicoff.

Wow — “Israel-first” and everything! It’s horrifyingly prejudiced but the left will eat that stuff up! The funny thing is, I support Israel 100% but I’m also against US aid to Israel, because it makes the US feel like it can tell Israel what to do. Israel can afford the weapons it gets for free, and it could produce a lot of them itself. As long as America will still let Israel buy what it needs when it can’t produce something itself, then I think the military aid — and the imperialistic strings attached — should be scrapped.

amount of hasbara. I am sympathetic to your thought re US aid;as long as the aid to Israel’s enemies were similarly cutwere similarly cut, I think it would be a positive development.
Remember that the famous $3billion per year that Israel gets is supposed to be recompense for giving up the Sinai as part of Carter’s Sinai Accords; without that aid, which is certainly of
substantial use, what would Israel have gained for these sacrifices?
Thats the whole point, they never should have signed on to that agreement.
Consider: since we signed on to those accords, the american have had a client state they could openly sell their best weaponry to. Firther, weve been kicked around for 30 years now for accepting thst aid package. And in the end, look what kind of government the Egyptians now have!
So to sum up, thats exactly why such deals are horrible.

Lee Whitnum, when elected, will cease allowing Israel to continue making enemies for the US, while she, unlike most current US legislators, puts American interests ahead of the interests of a foreign state.
