Ok, so maybe Omri Caspi and Gal Mekel did it the hard way (having been born and raised in Israel), but it seems Amar’e Stoudemire is poised to be the third Israeli to play in the NBA. How can that be you may ask? Apparently he has applied for Israeli citizenship.
The sore-kneed Stoudemire, who is touring Israel, has now applied for Israeli citizenship, his agent Happy Walters told nymag.com.
Stoudemire has been in Israel since mid-July, first as assistant coach for Canada in the Maccabiah Games and is touring the country while exploring his Jewish roots on his mother’s side.
So come the next Olympics, or world cup (or whatever they call it in Basketball) Israel looks like it might have a pretty good team on paper.
