There are many stories of Israeli bus drivers doing amazing things. Many years ago, there was the story of how one bus driver insisted on driving then former Prime Minister Golda Meir to her home, and no one on the bus objected. I know of one case where one of my son’s soldiers forgot his backpack on one bus as he transferred to another. The second bus driver told him to get in quickly. He radioed to the driver of the next bus who pulled over and waited until the second bus could catch up and get the backpack before it turned around and resumed its correct route.
There are many stories, especially from years ago, of how bus drivers recognized that a terrorist was about to board the bus and quickly took evasive action, locking the doors and even in one case that I remember, physically pushing the terrorist off the bus. Another sped up and then hit the brake, causing the terrorist to stumble drop his weapon.
And now, another amazing story. Today, a young child began to cry out, “My mother, my mother.” The bus driver didn’t realized right away what had happened, but when he did, he also realized that it would take time for help to arrive; time the woman might not have had and so, without hesitation, immediately returned to the driver’s seat and drove her – and all the other passengers – directly to the hospital. The bus was met by hospital staff and the 43-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital.

Without question, the quick thinking and the caring response from the bus driver saved her life. In so many ways, this story is what my country is all about. Life is so precious.
