The Jerusalem Post reports how an Australian educator has been in Israel learning from the Israeli experience in educating disadvantaged comunities, in order to benefit Aboriginal children.

An Australian professor has studied the Israeli ‘Tafnit’ program to better the education of her country’s Aboriginal children, The Australian daily newspaper reported Thursday.

For the past two weeks Professor Marcia Langton has been touring Australia with a group of Israeli educators in an “education express” minivan, in an effort to promote high-quality education amongst all Aboriginal youngsters, from Cairns to the east Kimberley to central Victoria.

“This first visit is intended to be a short tour to introduce the Tafnit program and Hebrew University programs to interested Aboriginal and other community leaders and educators,” the professor said in an interview to The Australian.

“The experience of meeting Israelis committed to ensuring educational equity has changed the way that I think about education and ways of overcoming educational disadvantage,” Langton added.

The Israeli educators – Ayala Berkovitch, Nisim (Max) Cohen, Elite Olshtain, Moshe Salomon and Shalva Weil ñ are all specialists in delivering quality education for disadvantaged communities.

Langton was inspired by the high-education outcomes amongst Israel’s Ethiopian and Bedouin young people. She was especially interested to learn how a people brought from Africa to a Western country like Israel were absorbed as Israeli citizens and managed to achieve high educational status.

The great lessons for Australia, according to Langton, are: “Accelerated learning programs work when everyone is taught the standard curriculum, having regard to cultural difference, where it is understood that every child is capable of achieving the expected educational outcomes.”
