How’s this for parochial?

A Melbourne couple who want to protect the chant “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi” from overseas exploitation have taken out a trademark on the phrase.

Greg and Diane Davies from Airport West have spent about $5,000 trademarking the sports slogan in several classes including advertising, packaging and education.

“We want to educate the Australian public to buy Australian,” Mr Davies said today.

I don’t really understand what these people are concerned about. I would have thought that “”Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi” had very limited application. I can’t see Korea or Spain using it, or any other country for that matter. Israelis like to say “oy vey”, but that isn’t quite the same thing.
