A Syrian man has been jailed for downloading material from a banned web site and distributing it to his friends.
Syria has jailed a man who downloaded material from a banned website and e-mailed it to others. Abdel Rahman al-Shaghouri, 32, received a two-and-a-half year sentence for “publishing false news that saps the morale of the nation”.
I wonder what this banned website is.
Abdel Rahman Al Shaghouri was arrested in February 2003 for the electronic mailing of articles he had lifted from a British Web site which is banned in Syria.
Here in Israel, you can freely access a British Web site which publishes false news that saps the morale of the nation. And you would think that the BBC would be a little more grateful..
Update: Here is more on this case. Amnesty suggest that you write to Syrian President Assad, since he is a reasonable guy….as long as you address him correctly.
President Assad has shown willingness in the past to grant amnesties to hundreds of political prisoners and release them from prison. Ask him to show kindness and understanding in ëAbdel Rahman al-Shaghouriís case as well.
