UEFA have shown that they have little, or no, respect for Judaism, after scheduling Maccabi Tel Aviv’s clash with Bayern Munich only hours before Rosh Hashanah.

European soccer’s governing body UEFA agreed yesterday to push back Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on September 15, the eve of Rosh Hashanah, from 9:45 P.M to 6:30 P.M so that players and supporters do not have to violate the Jewish holiday. However the move has not satisfied Maccabi, which is still pushing for the game to be brought forward by a day.

“The new kick-off time is worse than the original one,” Maccabi chairman Loni Herzikovic said yesterday. “All of Maccabi’s fans will be in synagogue and we will be playing soccer. We have spoken with Bayern Munich, and they are willing to play the tie a day earlier. We will take every means at our disposal to challenge the decision.”

Herzikovic said that UEFA had created an absurd situation, and that if necessary, the club would take its case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

So here we have a European body showing a lack of respect for a religion. If this were another specific religion, heads would roll.
