The picture on the left shows a grilled cheese sandwich that sold for $US 28,000 on eBay.
The reason for the hefty price tag? The seller said that it bears the image of the virgin Mary.
While I can make out what looks like the face of a woman, who is to say that it is the face of Mary? Does anyone even know what Mary looked like? After all, there are no photographs from the time. The image might very well be Suha Arafat or Hillary Clinton (which would severely devalue the sandwich).
In any event, I have on many occasions looked at my food and seen resemblances to famous people. (I can specifically recall eating ice cream which bore an eerie resemblance to Saddam Hussein. And how could I forget the Kim Jong-II jello?)
Don’t get me wrong. Believing in miracles is a good thing. I just don’t think one needs to look for one in a 10-year old grilled cheese sandwich.
