Australia’s 60 Minutes have run an interview with Sheik “Catweazle” Taj al-Din al-Hilaly, in which the Sheik basically lies through his teeth in an attempt to come across as a moderate Muslim who has embraced Australian values.

You can view the interview here, and read the transcript here.

My “favorite” moments:

  • After interviewer Ray Martin states “One of the criticisms of you by Australians is that you’ve been here so long but you don’t seem to integrate. You don’t even speak our language,” Hilaly, who up until then had not uttered even a word of English, tries to sound “Aussie.” He switches to broken English, saying “I think my age now at the finish ‚Äî I’m 66 or 67 now. I think too late, mate.”
  • Hilaly trying to convince everyone that he has no problem with women wearing bikinis, or even topless women.
  • After Hilaly’s statement that Islam forbids the beating of women, Ray Martin asks “So if you beat your wife, what would she do?” Hilaly responds: “She hits me sometimes.” Meaning that he admits to beating his wife.
  • Hilaly’s statement that he is “the most moderate of all Muslim clerics.”
  • Hilaly’s inability to hide his true self, despite his best efforts to sound moderate. After Ray Martin confronts him with his recent quote that the holocaust, which killed six million Jews, was a Zionist lie, Hilaly replies “I would like to stress that I condemned the holocaust. But there are hundreds upon hundreds of others who are saying that the figures are not correct.” When asked why he would say such a thing, Hilaly responds “I say straightaway what is in my heart. I say it.”
