Ego Trip(base)

Last week, I was informed by mail that I had won a blog award.

tripbaseHello there,

Tripbase Awards 2011

I am pleased to inform you that your site has been chosen to receive a Tripbase 2011 Blog Award.

This year our panel of judges reviewed hundreds of sites from across the Internet before hand-selecting the best ten for each travel category. Your site is among these elite ranks, and can be seen here:

I would like to congratulate you on your continued hard work and achievement in winning a Tripbase Award – this year, the awards have been featured in CNBC, CBS and AOL News. We have created small and large badges for you to show off your achievement to your readers, so please feel free to grab the code and upload it onto your site.

Well done once again, and keep up the great work.

Hmm………..

Don’t get me wrong. I like a good award as much as the next guy. But “featured” in CNBC, CBS and AOL News? More like had their press released mentioned on those sites.

As for my blog’s eligibility, here’s a short blurb on these awards.

The awards were started in 2009 to recognize excellence in travel blogging and acknowledge the increasing popularity of blogging as a passionate pursuit for thousands of web savvy travelers.

My blog is many things, but a travel blog?

Here’s what I think: these awards are an elaborate ploy to have blogs with relatively high Google Page Ranks place the badge codes on their sites, codes that include a link back to the Tripbase site. This way, Tripbase’s own ranking increases in the search engine.

So here’s what I’ve done: I have placed the badge in the right sidebar of the blog – without copying the full code with link back to Tripbase – to “show off” my new blog award, but at the same time not encourage anyone to make up phony blog awards.

Nobody mess with the David.
