Yesterday in the park I normally take my kids to the council was putting on a little show. If you look very carefully you might see a couple of Smurfs. I’m sorry it’s a bit blurry, it was already quite dark and a kid was tugging at me.

Do you see what I saw?

That guy on the right, sitting on the grass, why is he there?

Why yes, he is openly carrying a 9mm semi-automatic pistol (a Glock if I’m not mistaken but I didn’t ask him or spend a long time staring at him).

You see whenever we have lots of people in one place, we hire a security guard. We’re not in a “settlement” (unless you’re a delusional Jew/Israel hatting lunatic): this is Tel Aviv. It’s just what years of bad experiences with Arabs trying to kill us has taught us to do.

Even though, thanks to a security barrier and ever vigilant security services, we’re much safer than ever in Israel, we don’t take chances with our kids. We know there are Arabs living 25 minutes drive from here who would love to kill our children. It’s just a simple fact. Just like insisting all homes have a bomb shelter, we guard all crowds.

Aside from the fact  he bears a passing resemblance to Danny DeVito, he’s just a regular security guard paid to keep an eye out for trouble. I’m not sure how much good he’d do but one hopes he’d have a chance of shooting a bad guy if he had to. And I dare say if someone tried to throw a rock at him, he’d shoot back.

For the record I don’t want anyone’s children to be killed. But anyone trying to kill innocents needs to be stopped. In any appropriate way.
