While these great ebikes similar to this Macfox eBike come in all shapes and sizes, the one I’m most impressed with is that owned by a friend. He has the most amazing folding bike and it’s electric. He has designed and had manufactured (partly in Israel) his own conversion kit that will fit most bicyles. That means you can take the very best bike and make it electric with the very highest quality battery, motor and controller. No compromises with cheap Chinese bikes.
His Freedom eBikes kit is interesting because, unlike with cars, he can use the very latest in batteries and motors. Cars take so long to design and build, they’re often using pretty old tech by the time we get to drive them. For example, he is using a 1 kg battery that holds roughly twice as much energy as the battery in my car holds per kg.
On the lightweight, folding Brompton bike the kit is good for an impressive 50km on the flat and 25km in more hilly terrain. That’s as an assistance to pedalling. Once the kit reaches 25 kmh the rider pedals with little effort to maintain that speed. It’s very natural and it just feels right to keep your legs turning, even though you’re not putting in much effort.
