Aussie Rock star Jon Stevens has reportedly run over former Ha’aretz columnist Akiva Eldar, in an accident (and not deliberately because of his politics).
Bonus weirdness: Eldar’s brother is married to someone called Charlie Brown, and Steven’s son has the Jewish/Israeli sounding first name Levi.
Eldar not looking very happy, but probably happier than he did after being run over
The 69-year-old man allegedly hit by rock star Jon Steven’s luxury BMW 4WD in Point Piper on Monday is high-profile Israeli journalist Akiva Eldar.
Mr Eldar has been in Sydney visiting his extended family, including his brother-in-law, the businessman and property developer Danny Avidan and his wife, fashion designer Charlie Brown, who live in Point Piper just metres from where he was stuck by Stevens’ car.
It is understood Mr Eldar was on his way to visit his mother-in-law, Mr Avidan’s elderly mother, when he was hit.
On Monday night he underwent surgery on his right arm and left leg and is due to have more surgery in coming days, delaying his return to Jeruselum by several weeks.
Mr Stevens had been visiting his son, Levi, who also lives in Point Piper, not far from where Mr Stevens’ estranged fiancee Jodhi Meares lives, who is described as a “friendly neighbour” of Mr Avidan and Ms Brown.
On Tuesday Ms Brown was photographed visiting Mr Eldar at St Vincent’s Hospital where he is being treated. She described Monday’s incident as “unfortunate for all parties”.
Mr Eldar is a columnist for Al-Monitor, a news website based in Washington which specialises in coverage of the Middle East. He is also a published author.
However he is best known for his 35 years working a chief political columnist and editorial writer for the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz.
On Monday Stevens issued a statement to Channel Nine saying: “I hope the gentleman is OK. Police and paramedics have assured me he is but I’ll be checking in to make sure. It was just an accident. I can’t take a trick right now.”
Needless to say, although I detest Eldar’s politics, I wish him a complete and speedy recovery.
