KeepOlim: Helping New Immigrants Thrive in Israel

In 2014, LiAmi Lawrence decided to make aliyah.

In America he had experienced antisemitism and was devoted to Israel.

LiAmi had visited Israel on numerous occasions, loved the country and the people, but it took him 20 years to make the break from a comfortable life in America.

“I was 50 years old and it was now or never.”

But it was tough going, even after such a long period of waiting and undying enthusiasm.

He couldn’t find a job, had no money, got sick but luckily his neighbours offered him food.

After nine months he’d had enough hardship and decided to leave, but his friend, Tal Ekrony, persuaded him to put his nose to the grindstone instead of throwing in the towel.

LiAmi’s decision to remain in Israel was a combination of initiative and opportunity.

In America he had vast knowledge of social entertaining, live interviews on radio and television, and public relations.

And that’s how ‘KeepOlim’ got off the ground, helping olim out of their difficulties and guiding them into a more satisfying and productive lifestyle.

Making aliyah is a mitzvah, just like entering another world where people care about other people and uncover the true spirit of freedom and togetherness.

But it’s not always plain sailing. Israel is a country that has been hardened, purely for survival.

In 2015, LiAmi created the Private Group ‘KeepOlim’ on Facebook and within just five days more than 3000 people from around the world joined.

The surprising initial success of the venture motivated him to create a non-profit organization to formalise the process.

Within a few months membership had swollen to 8000 and in just 14 months of existence, KeepOlim became one of the largest post aliyah organisations in Israel.

Today the number of Members stands at 48,000 and still growing.

A remarkable result, vindicating LiAmi’s initiative and determination to build a highly worthwhile entity.
