Moron of the Day: Germaine Greer
With people from around the globe mourning the loss of Steve Irwin, and heaping praise on the man who brought joy to millions of people, feminist and fellow Australian Germaine Greer thought it appropriate to attack him.
In a scathing attack in a British newspaper, Greer said nature had taken its revenge on Irwin for his robust handling of Australia’s native animals.Mocking Irwin’s multi-million-dollar empire and his “Crikey!” catch-cry, Greer accused the world-famous TV star of placing the welfare of animals after his own interests.
“There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle,” she wrote in The Guardian.
“Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress.
“Every snake badgered by Irwin was at a huge disadvantage, with only a single possible reaction to its terrifying situation — which was to strike.
“Easy enough to avoid if you know what’s coming.”
The author of The Female Eunuch hit below the belt as she accused Irwin of sending the wrong message to kids.
“The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing 10 times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn,” Greer wrote.
Despite the fact that Greer is completely wrong – even animal rights activists have applauded Steve’s life work – how utterly despicable to say such things. His family are mourning as they come to terms with the loss of a husband and father, for goodness sake!
I suggest Greer goes off somewhere and burns her bra..preferably while still wearing it.
Update: And here are some of the usual suspects putting down Steve, while simultaneously ripping into George Bush.

not one saint steve worshipper has attempted to answer the criticisms properly without resorting to emotional, ad hominen attacks on who, whether you like it or not, or more probably, realise it or not, is one of australia’s few public intellectuals.

It amazes me that people tend to try to maintain there Identities as they were when they were at the peak of their most famous/infamous. Germaine Greer fit’s this profile perfectly.A renowned femenist /activist from 30 odd years ago that has no relevance in todays society,so she try’s at every turn to draw attention from her fellow man/woman by being opposed to the general attitudes of the time .Of course she is able to find a few supporters especialy when the target of her derision is a high profile individual Like the Late Steve Irwin. Obviously not everbody is going to agree with an Individual Like Steve so he is easy to attack. I am A hunter and a man with only a high school education so germaine and myself would not see eye to eye on anything, I agree that she has the right to her opinion but common decency must pevail.
To argue the points she raised ,I have fought her type of narrow mindedness all my life ,Animals are not people, they do not think at a level as we do yes intentional cruely is not necessary but Germaine uses the same emotive language ,that all anti’s use to cloud facts with emotion .
I personaly feel that Germaine Greer lives a sad and lonely life surrounded by followers of an ideal that is as outdated as arranged marriage ,And deserves pitty from her fellow man/woman who relises that none of us are perfect but just trying to do the best we can with what we have .

My problem with Ms Greer is not so much with what she wrote, ill-informed as it is, but with the timing of her comments.
Did her parents never teach her basic manners? It is simple, common courtesy to respect the recently deceased, no matter who they are, and to keep any negative opinions to oneself until the family and friends of the deceased have time to recover from their grief.
Obviously Ms Greer has not grasped the fundamentals of common courtesy or feels that she is somehow above the need to show consideration or respect to her fellow man.
It was also interesting to note that this sudden champion of animal rights was filmed on A Current Affair defending her words wearing a leopard print top. How humiliating for leopards everywhere!

Contrary to your obviously narrow view of the world, not all foreigners assume that one person=an entire nation. Speaking as a foreigner, I never for a moment thought that Steve represented all Australians, any more than I thought Paul Hogan did when he was all the rage. I (and others I know) perceived Steve as an intelligent, enthusiastic, well-educated and passionate champion of animals, the environment, and the betterment of the human race via an increased understanding of our relationship with nature. If that is portraying Australians in a negative way, then I just don’t know what to tell you.

While Mrs. Greer has every right to her opinion, what an insensitive jerk she must be to make these comments when Steve’s family have not even had the time to mourn or bury him. Even the bitterest of enemies would call a truce for time to mourn and bury the dead. Mrs. Greer must never had someone close to her die. She may be a woman, but she certainly is no “lady”. She apparently is very bitter about “something” – I hope she gets the professional help she so desperately needs.

Perhaps Germaine was wrong concerning Irwin. However I dont see how that gives you the right to so rudely attack her. She had a point about Steve’s capitalistic impetus. Ethically however it was a misstep and I believe we all know why. She spoke without care and offended many people.
