Inaccurate Reuters Caption of the Day

praying-youth.jpg

Israeli men pray as hundreds attend a memorial service for eight students, who were killed by a Palestinian gunman in a shooting attack last Thursday, in a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem March 13, 2008. REUTERS/Eliana Aponte (JERUSALEM)

Perhaps we can forgive the Reuters caption writer for thinking the Israelis are praying, although they are clearly not since the books they are reading from are not prayer books, but rather Talmuds.

However, does he/she really think these are men and not youth or boys?

(honorary hat tip: Soccer Dad, who sent me a mail pointing this out after I had already seen it myself)

Update: Here’s an example of Reuters doing the opposite (from a few years ago)

Ummm…the one in the middle appears to be asleep. Reminds me of my school daze.

They also got the “memorial service” wrong as well. If they were learning gemara (Talmud) then they were learning gemara as part of their regular seder (learning schedule) and not attending a memorial service.

I really wonder what their “style guide” says on who is considered a “youth” vs. “men”. Is the cutoff 18 years old? What happens if there is a mix of “youths” and “men”?

I’ve been trying to figure out if the pictures I’ve caught twice so far on the Jerusalem post site is doctored.
