Hijab Girl Floored

Remember the female Saudi judoka allowed to compete with a hijab?

Well I’m sure they were 82 seconds of spiritual joy.

Judoka Wojdan Shaherkani, the first Saudi Arabian woman to compete at the Olympics, sobbed as she admitted to being overwhelmed by her historic debut which lasted just 82 seconds on Friday.

Looking nervous and wearing a black, swimming cap-style head covering, she was beaten by Melissa Mojica of Puerto Rico in the first round of the women’s under-78kg category.

After the fight, where she barely mustered a challenge, the 16-year-old broke down in tears as she embraced her father, himself a judo referee.

“I’m proud, I’m happy and I want to continue in judo. I want to thank the fans for their support,” she said.

“I was disturbed and afraid at the beginning, it was my first time in a big competition and there was a lot of pressure because of the hijab issue.

“I was not comfortable because I didn’t have any experience of big events. It took its toll on me.”

Meanwhile, it looks like allowing her to wear a hijab wasn’t the only way the IOC bent over backwards for her.

The teenager has only been practising judo for two years and has a blue belt. If not for her special invitation, she would never have qualified for the Olympics.

i feel bad for her because she is a pawn of both the islamists and the ioc

whats worse, she wasnt the only female used, just the only one who got tons of press, because of the rules of her sport.

i watched the track prelims….there were more there…all dressed in inappropriate clothing for the sport…and in talking, even inappropriate by 50s standards

they were wearing warmup suits…you dont sprint in those

and of course, one of the women blew a hammy right out of the blocks….now that can happen to anyone, but that was the only injury that i saw in the prelims

next up for the saudis is an american girl who is an avg 400m racer, who does not wear a hijab and wears a form fitting suit (was in vogue in the 90s, but has been replaced by the show almost everything outfit) she says she will wear what the saudi handlers say to…hope her school mates giver her hell when she returns to pepperdine

what is being gained by this? absolutely nothing…those women are all returning to the same repressive governments they left

legally, her opponent could have ripped off her head cover…she was being very respectful

      I am agree with you.
And I wouldn’t want to be in her shoes…she is just a kid, maybe she was forced to participate.
The look at her face while she was “escorted” by her father tells a lot.

I must say, that was a bit of a let-down. That wasn’t really a hijab, that was a like a chef or surgeon hat. If that’s all the controversy was about, that is a bit of a fizzle. I think letting someone compete in the same competition as women who have spent years preparing, who maue sacrifices, and who put in their all, just to qualify, when she is not qualified for this competition, is what’s controversial.

Leave the poor kid alone, guys. She’s 16, she’s done precisely nothing to anybody, and if she wants to cover her hair and compete in sports all at the same time, it’s really none of our business.

Will she get a driver’s license when she returns?

  5. Carbon Steel Turtle says:

Well we can count on the Naomi Wolf’s of the world cheering when this girl returns home to be publicly flogged.

I just had a horrible, massive, nasty discussion on my facebook page about Female Genital Mutilation.

After it veered unfailingly onto male infant circumcision for about 200 posts, despite my repeated attempts to redirect it, we actually got someone finally breaking ranks and standing up for forced clitorectomy, removal of both inner and outer labia, and the sewing up of the vaginal entrance. I blew my top. I was then called a cultural imperialist.

This isn’t strictly relevant, I guess, but it has upset me a great deal, and left me wondering what the fuck is wrong with people.

Am I howling alone in the wilderness? I’m the racist – because I think little brown girls’ clitorises are as important as little pink girls’ clitorises? Seriously?

I would be for Muslim FMG if they also did a hysterectomy along with it. That way, there would be no more FMGs in a generation’s time and 1400+ years of butchery would come to an end.
