Ron Dermer Lays Out Why Netanyahu Has To Go To Washington

The Voice of Israel has a great 3 min clip from Israeli Ambassador to the U.S.A., Ron Dermer speaking in Boca Raton, Florida on why the Israeli Prime Minister has to accept an invitation to speak to the US parliament at this time. I’m inclined to agree with him.

I also wanted to link to this piece by Jack Englard who was, like most of us, confused about whether to like this move or not. He changed his mind and eventually came to much the same conclusion that Ron Dermer lays out:

Throughout the generations the Jewish people never fared well when they chose silence.

Haunted by Jabotinsky’s nightmare, Netanyahu refuses to be calmed or quieted.

Zeev Jabotinsky was advised to hush up. Don’t make trouble. But he kept speaking against the European catastrophe he saw coming, and it came. This time it’s Iran and Netanyahu is wise to the looming catastrophe from the country that never misses a chance to declare its intentions to destroy Israel…first Israel, then America.

For the sake of Zion, for the safety of the United States, the Prime Minister of Israel must speak, and let the chips fall where they may.

  1. This guy is gonna be about as welcome at the White House as the asian flu for the next two years. The sooner he’s replaced the better.

      1. As a lifelong Democrat and observer of American politics, I might have some knowledge and insight on what is actually going on here. You don’t care what I think. Fine. Others might benefit from it, so you might consider that if you choose to reply to another of my comments. Or you could just spit out the first thing that pops into your head and share with the rest of us like you just did. Either way, hopefully Israellycool will get more mouse clicks (Is that how it works, Dave?)

        1. Jim – I had little interest in politics from the time I was able to vote in 1959 until 9/11. then I started to pay attention, couldn’t wait to vote for George W. Bush in 2004. I was the first in my extended family to vote R much to their consternation. with the lead up to 2008 I read as much as I could about BHO, concluded that he was wrong for America, haven’t changed my opinion at all.

          1. Well, you only have two more years to grit your teeth and try to endure the unendurable, Herb. I suppose it’s been like getting a root canal without the Novocaine for the last six years for you. But the next Democrat will be a lot better, I promise (the next one would have to be, right?). How do we win you back, Herb?

            1. Hillary? Well, what I like about her is that she’s thoroughly dishonest, so she is more likely to compromise. On the other hand, she has a reputation for destroying the lives of the “little people” who get in her way, so from a humanitarian point of view, I hope she doesn’t get in.

Blah, blah, blah. I read your snide remarks on here all the time. Your leftist point of view is a huge problem for America as well as Israel. If your comments were about the US only, I wouldn’t bother with it as I don’t live there any longer, but they’re not. The left is the problem.

          1. So it’s the tone of my comments and not the substance so much that bothers you? I can work on the tone if that really is the problem, but my opinions are indeed mine and I’ll post them here as long as I’m permitted by the folks who run this blog. Why is it that so many people like you who oppose the Left want to shut us up?

It’s not your tone, it’s your opinions that are a danger to us. Stop endangering our lives and we won’t care what opinion you hold.

              1. We have an honest disagreement, then. I’ll make my points and you can make yours and maybe one of us will see things differently as a result of reading the other’s comment. That’s what a healthy dialogue and debate are all about.

OK, then lets lay out whether you have any skin in the game. Do you live in Israel? Are you Jewish? Yes to both for me.

Because if you don’t, it’s just really conjecture on your part and doesn’t cost you a thing to spout off against Netanyahu when the alternative is a morally bankrupt left that refuses to address reality.

    1. My old Dean at Yeshiva College, former ambassador Danny Kurtzer, feels the same. Then again, he was one of “Baker’s Boys”.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Obama met with Merkel her election. More to the point, one of his top operatives is working with an organization that received funding from my US tax money whose specific aim is unseat the current Israeli government. And they are circumventing Israeli campaign laws, by not specifying a replacement. If we had the guts, they would be deported.

Obama may have some problem meddling in Israeli elections. You see, his favorite tactics would be difficult in Israel, given how tough our election committee is. Or would be, were it not headed by an enemy of Israel (who also happens to be an Arab, although I am not one of those people who assume the two to be equivalent). (Of course we require ID! We aren’t third world.)

You read Ha’aretz, right? Well, this appeared in Ha’aretz. IN HEBREW ONLY.

      1. I used to love reading Ha’aretz but not enough to pay for it. Darn pay wall! Just hope Dave doesn’t put one up for Israellycool.

This stuff about protocol and not wanting to meddle in Israeli politics is all baloney. Anyone who pays attention to these things knows better. Our relationship would be better if Obama and Netanyahu stuck to their own domestic politics and stopped meddling in each other’s backyard.

Not stated in this controversy is Congress’s vast powers concerning foreign policy, including but not limited to the power to levy tariffs, ratify treaties and indeed to declare war. It’s all enumerated in the Constitution. Therefore, inviting Bibi to speak is well within its prerogatives.
