Words cannot describe what Nick Berg’s father must be going through in the aftermath of his son’s horrific murder at the hands of Islamic terrorists. Perhaps it is his grief that has led him to make some extremely misguided statements.
The father of an American beheaded in Iraq said in an interview broadcast Monday that he holds U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld responsible for his son’s death and called for his resignation.

Speaking to Israel Army Radio, Berg’s father, Michael, said Rumsfeld bears most of the responsibility for his son’s death.
“I very definitely do hold the Department of Defense, the FBI, the Bush administration and especially Donald Rumsfeld responsible,” Michael Berg said.
“He (Rumsfeld) said he is taking responsibility for the sexual abuse scandal … he hasn’t really taken responsibility, he didn’t lose his son, he didn’t lose anything,” Berg told the radio.
“I think that a resignation will be great, I would love it,” he said.

Michael Berg said the only reason his son had been killed was because of American actions in Iraq.
“These people had nothing against my son, they couldn’t have had anything against my son. They were against what the United States is doing to their section of the world,” he said.
Wrong. These people had something against his son, regardless of US military action in Iraq. Nick’s crime was being a Jewish infidel. And if you want proof, you needn’t look further than at Daniel Pearl’s similar execution a few years ago.
Was Daniel killed because of US military action in Iraq?
Was he killed because of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal?
The terrorists are constantly providing a litany of reasons why they act the way they do, but this shouldn’t obfuscate the truth – they are trying to impose the rule of Islam upon the world. And there is no room for infidels, especially those pesky Jews.
The Jews – they led the US to war against our brethren in Iraq.
The Jews – they are trampling over our poor brethren in Palestine.
The Jews – they are the sons of monkeys and pigs.
Armed with this mindset, Nick Berg’s killers probably found about his religion from word on the street, after Nick had been detained by Iraqi police for being Jewish/having an Israeli stamp in his passport. This is even something that Michael Berg admits may have contributed to his death.
“I’m sure they got his passport so I’m sure they knew he had been in Israel, but he wasn’t acting on behalf of Israel in any way,” he told the radio.
The fact that Nick was American may have been sufficient cause to behead him, but I have my doubts. In any event, blaming his execution on US military intervention in Iraq or the prison abuse scandal is disingenuous.
Detractors of US military action in Iraq (like Michael Berg) conveniently forget that Al-Qaeda slammed planes into the twin towers, and murdered Daniel Pearl, well before any military action in Iraq. And they will continue to commit similar atrocities as long as we aren’t living under the Islamic rule of law.
Or at least as long as we aren’t hitting them back with all of our might.

Mr. Berg’s comments are way off base. No more wrong, perhaps, than those of most left-liberal American Jews who cannot believe people hate them just because of what they are, but wrong nevertheless.
But I give him as much slack as he wants. No one should have to survive such a horror. For him I have only sympathy and sorrow.
