Forget about AA. This man had a much more novel strategy for beating the habit.
Roche, who changed his name in 2001 from Paul George Holland, was 24 years-old when he arrived in Australia in 1978 with the wife he married in what was then West Berlin.
He said he spent some time in the army while living in England, but didn’t elaborate. After divorcing his first wife he married again, this time an Australian woman, but that also ended in divorce.
He said he turned to Islam in 1992 to curb his drinking problems. Indonesians working with him in a Sydney factory helped him and introduced him to fellow worshippers at a Sydney mosque, where he eventually met Abdullah Sungkar, then the head of Jemaah Islamiyah, and made a pledge of allegiance.
But not to worry. Where he is going, he should be less concerned about alcohol and more worried about dropping the soap in the shower.

Just heard the bad news this morning.
Jack Roche received a pathetic minimum 4.5 year sentence. Seeing as he has served 18 months already, he will be a free man in 3 years. Quite a few people are outraged by the lenient sentence, it makes a joke of our war against terror.
