Another suicide bombing today, wounding two IDF soldiers, one of whom is in medium-serious condition. Here is more on what happened:

Palestinian suicide bomber blew up near a group of soldiers guarding a gate in the security fence in the Kalkilya area Tuesday morning, wounding two soldiers. One of the soldiers is listed in moderate-to-serious condition and is suffering from burns to the face. The other soldier was lightly wounded. They were taken to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva.

The attack occurred just before 7:30 a.m. when a Palestinian riding a bicycle approached IDF soldiers guarding a gate leading to Palestinian agricultural plots between Hable and Kalkilya in the northern West Bank.

As soldiers approached the Palestinians to conduct the necessary security checks, the Palestinian blew himself up.

Security officials estimate that the terrorist had intended to blow up inside Israel and not near the soldiers, and that the troops had thwarted an attack on civilians.

An IDF officer told The Jerusalem Post that the gates dotted along the security fence in the Samaria region are opened three times a day in order to allow Palestinians access to their agricultural plots on the other side of the fence.

Officials are investigating the incident and the gate remains shut. Searches are being conducted to determine who was behind the attack.

Lt.-Col. Shimon said the terrorist attempted to take advantage of the IDF’s humanitarian actions in the area, which, despite the terror warnings, allow Palestinians access to farmlands. Shimon, who commands the ‘Meitar’ Battalion operating in the Kalkilya region, said his soldiers thwarted a terrorist attack on the Homefront.

“The terrorists attacked a gate used by farmers to pass through the security fence that is opened every day so that Palestinians can improve their quality of life. A suicide bomber riding a bicycle arrived at the gate and was stopped by the troops. They thwarted an attack on the Homefront during the High Holy Days by putting their bodies on the line. This is another incident of the cynical abuse by the terrorists of the measures we take to help the Palestinians. The fence has again proved itself effective,” Shimon said.

This underscores both the efficacy of the security fence, as well as the cynical tactics of the PLO Arab terrorists.

I am sorry that the fence may cause some inconvenience to PLO Arab farmers, but the blame lies at the feet of the terrorists. Besides, being killed is a far greater inconvenience to Israelis, and the fence is instrumental in preventing this.
