The Real Deal vs Making Deals

Readers may be wondering why I have not joined in the chorus of Israeli bloggers covering Madonna’s visit to Israel.

I simply am not particularly interested.

I will say this though: I do admire Madonna’s apparent genuine quest for spiritual enlightenment. I saw her speaking on Israeli television last night, and she is either a fantastic actress, or she is the real deal when it comes to desiring to better herself and the world. And for those of you who have seen Shanghai Surprise or Swept Away – chances are she is the real deal.

While Madonna may be the real deal, the same cannot be said about the brand of Kabbala she is involved with. You see, it really is a brand, replete with merchandising.

While the Kabbalah Center gathering was promoted as spiritual, there was also a commercial aspect.

At booths set up in the lobby, Kabbala-inspired goods such as backpacks, jewelry, stuffed dolls, and children’s clothing all emblazoned with one of the 72 names of God were on sale. They were even tequila shot glasses (NIS 125 each) with one of God’s names on them.

“We want to have more things relating to Kabbala. They help us with our transformation, with developing a change from within,” said Rachel Roded, of the LA center.

“You wouldn’t understand, it’s hard to explain to you,” Ellis said of the wide variety of goods on sale.

It’s not so hard, actually. Even someone without a business degree can understand.
