“I Thought They Were Matzah Balls!”

I just couldn’t resist this story:

A life prisoner petitioned the Tel Aviv District Court Tuesday, after the Prisons Service stopped supplying him strictly kosher food after guards found pornographic material in his cell.

Gur Hammel, a resident of the West Bank settlement of Itamar, is serving life in the Ayalon Prison in Ramle for killing a 68-year-old Palestinian man who was harvesting olives. The murder was racially motivated.

Prison guards stopped supplying Hammel with strictly kosher meals, which are supervised by the Haredi religious authority, after they found a pornographic magazine in his cell.

[insert matzah ball or kaparot punchline here]

The man is in jail for murder. If doing things contrary to Jewish law should preclude his observance of anything in accordance with Jewish law, then I would have thought murder would qualify.

In any event, here is Hammel’s excuse for possession of the porn:

Hammel said he regretted possessing the magazine and that it was a “one-off slip.”

Really? Because from what I heard, she wasn’t wearing anything.
