I can’t fathom how anyone could have thought any good could come of this:
An outraged Jewish community has demanded an apology for the “anti-semitic” comments published by student and UWS board member Luke Fomiatti.Vice Chancellor Janice Reid has been forced to write to almost 40,000 students and staff stating the article – in the university newspaper The Western Onion – was unacceptable.Intended as a send-up of the Muslim cartoon issue, the front page spread includes anti-Jewish drawings and refers to “a vampire with a Star of David tattoo drinking the blood of a young boy labelled Europe”.NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Knoll has written to Mr Fomiatti saying the article sought to “dehumanise Jews by resorting to the offensive language and disgusting illustrations which were a tool of Nazi Germany”.“To say that the Jewish community is appalled by the racist material that appeared on the front page … is an understatement,” Mr Knoll said.“Your front page followed the example of the Iranian.
Was this really intended as a send-up of the Muslim cartoon issue? Or was it just an excuse to bear some anti-Semitic fangs with a ready made excuse? And if it was really intended as a send-up, then what on earth was the point? All that Fomiatti succeeded in showing was that he does not think much of Jews, and that Jews do not resort to threats and violence in response to such offensive material.
Update: Fomiatti is part of that anti-Semitic publication Green Left Weekly, so I am guessing he was just venting.
Update: He is also pro-palestinian. Just saying.
