I Smell a Rat

A Palestinian man stands next to the body of 17-year-old Taha Alhangalawi, at the hospital morgue in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007. Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian teenager along Israel’s West Bank separation barrier near the city of Ramallah. The army said it shot the Palestinian in the legs when he tried to cut the fence. Palestinian health officials said the 17-year-old’s artery was severed and he bled to death. While the IDF did shoot and kill a suspected terrorist trying to infiltrate Israel through the security fence, there are currently no details as to his identity or age. That is not to say that a 17 year-old palestinian was not shot and killed today.
At least one Palestinian was killed and some 20 others were wounded Thursday afternoon in fierce exchanges of fire that erupted between Hamas and Fatah gunmen in Gaza.

A 17-year-old Palestinian was killed during the gun battles, and two of those injured in the fighting are listed in critical condition.
What’s the bet that the 17 year-old in the picture is this victim of Hamas-Fatah violence, and was not killed by the IDF as AP photographer Majdi Mohammed would have us believe?

The plot thickens: Here is the same picture, with a different caption:

No mention of how he was killed. I wonder why.

Update: Not surprisingly, Reuters have gotten in on the act with pictures of the teen – now in full martyr’s regalia – and captions such as this:

Palestinians mourn over the body of Taha Alhangalawi, 17, at the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem’s Old city February 1, 2007. Israeli troops shot dead a third Palestinian near Israel’s West Bank barrier on Thursday, hospital sources said. They said Alhangalawi had been shot in the leg by Israeli troops and bled to death. REUTERS/Ammar Awad (JERUSALEM)

Unlike the AP caption, this Reuters caption does not include an IDF admission to shooting the young man (which I am guessing does not exist), nor is their a mention of him being shot while trying to cut the security fence (which seems to be what happened today to a 35 year-old suspected terrorist). Perhaps the Reuters stringer Ammar Awad learned from the mistake of his AP counterpart Majdi Mohammed, and did not include such easily refutable details.

I’m also perplexed about the mention of a third palestinian shot dead by the IDF. Besides the fact that this detail seems out of context in the caption, there is no mention of a second palestinian shot dead.
