Off the Wall

You may recall the callous response of feminist Germaine Greer, to the death of “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin.

Now the Herald Sun reports on Steve’s posthumous revenge.

In the nude (I guess she burned more than her bra).

No, really. Don’t do it]

Steve Irwin has exacted a belated revenge on his critic-in-chief, Germaine Greer.

In an ironic twist, Irwin’s portrait has replaced Greer‚Äôs in Canberra‚Äôs National Portrait Gallery.

The photograph of the wildlife warrior was installed in the gallery last Friday.

It was hung in a space previously occupied by a nude photograph of the expat feminist and author.

Greer famously said she had no sympathy for Irwin just days after he was killed by a stingray’s barb.

“The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing 10 times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn,” Greer wrote in her column in the Guardian.

Herald Sun online readers were united in the condemnation of Greer, particularly her habit of continually attacking Australia from England. Greer has previously described Australia as soul-less and obsessed by sport and TV soap Neighbours.

She has also claimed she would not visit Australia without a specific invitation and permission from an indigenous community.

A spokesman for the National Portrait Gallery said the decision to swap the portraits was “totally coincidental.”

“At the moment we only have space for 100 works so we rotate our images all the time so the public can get more exposure to our collection,” spokesman David Edghill said.

“She hasn’t been bumped. She is just down in our registration office with our other works.

“Obviously with Steve Irwin there has been a lot of public interest in that portrait because it is quite a unique shot. And of course with all the press Steve Irwin has been getting we’ve needed to hang him.”

Although, I’m sure most of Australia would rather hang Greer.
