Abdullah Al-Hadlaq of Kuwait’s Al Watan Daily argues that Lebanon should resume relations with Israel.
The final statement of the Syrian-Lebanese summit was below the expectations of the Lebanese government. The statement didn”t change the policy of the Syrian Baath party which aims to dominate Lebanon.
The Lebanese president met with his Syrian counterpart hoping that they could reach a deal, and treat Lebanon as an independent and sovereign country. But he was disappointed. The Syrian Baath party has dominated Lebanon for six decades and is not expected to respect Lebanon’s independence and sovereignty.
The statement issued by the Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Muallim has proved that Syria intends to keep dominating Lebanon and will not recognize Lebanon’s independence or sovereignty. He said that file of the Lebanese political detainees is complicated. He added that borders between Syria and Lebanon can never be demarcated because Israel is occupying Arab lands.
He said that the Syrian-Lebanese Supreme Council can be an alternative of diplomatic relations on ambassadorial level.
Does the Lebanese President still believe that Syria has an intention to recognize Lebanon’s independence and sovereignty?
I”d like to remind the Lebanese president that the Syrian regime is the ally of the Iranian regime. They both support and finance the armed militias in Lebanon. These militias are led by the Hezbollah which sees that it’s a state within a state. Hezbollah refuses to be a political party and instead insists of being an armed party.
Israel respects Lebanon’s sovereignty more than Syria does. It agrees with Lebanon about disarming the terrorist part, Hezbollah. Syria will never deal with Lebanon as an independent country. It believes that Lebanon is a part of Syria.
I advise the Lebanese president to resume diplomatic and commercial relations with Israel. Arab countries like Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Oman, Tunisia, Mauritania and other countries have relations with Israel. Lebanon should follow suit and resume relations with Israel. Lebanon will never enjoy peace ad stability unless it has relations with Israel and severs it relations with Syria.
Iran threatens Gulf countries and Syria threatens Lebanon. Lebanon and Gulf countries have no other choice but to ally with great countries and live in peace with Israel.
