The Day In Israel: Sat June 6th, 2009

Click refresh to see new updates during the day

I’m back home after spending a peaceful Sabbath at the inoutlaws. Let’s see what has gone on the past 24 or so hours:

  • The IAEA came out with a report saying that Iran had significantly expanded uranium enrichment with almost 5,000 centrifuges now operating and this had made it harder for UN inspectors to keep track of the disputed nuclear activity. The Iranians responded with Naaa-naaa-naaa-naaa-naaaaa.
  • The IAEA released another report saying traces of undeclared man-made uranium have been found at a second site in Syria. Israel responded by slamming the findings, as well as “Syria’s attempts to avoid answering the demands of the IAEA’s request to inspect [nuclear sites].”
  • Israeli officials have stated they will be forced to acknowledge the necessity of a future palestinian state, thanks to US President Barack Obama.
  • Former Israeli ambassador to the US Sallai Meridor said Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu’s failure to declare support for a two-state solution is causing “significant” damage to Israel. Although in my opinion not nearly as much as the statements of certain former Israeli ambassadors to the US.
  • French President Nicholas Sarkozy wasted no time being French.

Updates (Israel time; most recent at top)

11:06PM: Tom Brokaw asks US President Barack Obama…well, just go to 04:05 of the footage and see for yourself (hat tip: Hot Air).

10:55PM: According to a joint investigation by the IDF and the Border Police, a palestinian killed on Friday afternoon at a demonstration against the security barrier was in fact a Hamas operative who had been detained several times by Israeli authorities for various security offenses.

Of course, I didn’t need an investigation finding to alert me to his Hamas affiliation.
