Delmon Young of the Detroit Tigers

"Come over here, Jewboy"

Delmon Young has been suspended by the Detroit Tigers a day after he allegedly went on an alcohol-fueled anti-Semitic rampage in Manhattan that landed him in police custody. The 26-year-old has been placed on Major League Baseball’s restricted list pending a medical and psychological evaluation that is scheduled to take place at the beginning of next week, according to the Detroit News.

On Friday, Young apologised to his teammates, fans and family before facing a judge over charges he committed a hate crime.

The aggravated harassment charge could land the star with a prison sentence of up to a year if he is convicted.

The New York Post says that during the brief hearing, Young posted a $5,000 bond and was released less than an hour before the Tigers’ first game of the year against the New York Yankees, in which the $6.7 million-a-year outfielder did not take part.

The incident that resulted in Young’s arrest happened outside the Hilton Hotel on Sixth Avenue at around 2.30 on Friday. morning

That is when police say the extremely inebriated 26-year-old baseball player was heard shouting ‘You bunch of f***ing Jews’ when he saw a panhandler sporting a yarmulke and wearing a Star of David around his neck asking a group of men in town for a bachelor party for $40.

It was not clear whom the epitaph was directed at, but it was followed by Young allegedly shoving and then tackling one of the tourists, later identified by the Post as 32-year-old Jason Shank, who sustained scratches to his elbows, according to the criminal complaint filed against Young.

When Shank and his friends fled from the 6-foot-3, 240-pound player into the hotel, Young allegedly attempted to go after them, but was stopped by a Hilton guard who demanded identification.

Shank later told the Post that he could not believe he had been attacked by a major league player.

‘[It’s] pretty ridiculous and bizarre actually,’ he said. ‘At the time, we had no idea who it was.’

However, Young’s attorney, Dan Ollen, told the Post that a video of the incident shows that someone in Shank’s posse provoked Young, although the lawyer clarified that the tape has no audio.

This is not the first time Young has been violent. He apparently mistook an umpire for a Jew back in 2006.
