A former prisoner who was released in a deal between Hamas and Israel in 2011 tried to set herself on fire in central Ramallah on Thursday, onlookers said.
The woman, Abeer Odeh, 30, tried to set herself on fire in Ramallah’s Manara square but was stopped by police a Ma’an correspondent said.
The ex-prisoner was taken to a nearby police station, the reporter said.
Police said Odeh is suffering from a number of health problems and had tried to enter President Mahmoud Abbas’ headquarters to recruit his support.
She was not allowed to enter and threatened to set herself on fire in Manara square.
Odeh is the second person to make such a threat in the square since protests erupted over the high cost of living in the West Bank.
She hasn’t exactly set the world on fire since leaving prison, but given she was originally imprisoned for attempted murder, this is even better.
