JVP Once Again Prove They Are as Jewish as a Ham Sandwich

Anti-Israel group Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) have once again co-opted a Jewish holiday – this time Hanukkah – to pursue their decidedly not-Jewish agenda of bashing Israel, the Jewish state and indigenous home of the Jewish people.

Come light the People’s Menorah!

Now is the time to keep up the momentum.

Join us in a joyous and festive community celebration of Chanukah to reject all forms of white supremacy and rekindle our commitment to justice. All are welcome. Invite your friends & family!

From December 2-11, the Anti-Defamation League will be facilitating an exchange program* between US and Israeli police, ICE, border agents and soldiers — overlapping with Chanukah.

With racist nationalism on the rise in both places, we seek to disrupt these toxic convergences between the US and Israeli government and #EndTheDeadlyExchange. Together, we will continue building true safety through people’s movements for justice, equality, and liberation.

So invite your friends and family and join us in celebrating Chanukah the people’s way: gathering indoors with music and community, spilling into the streets led by the teytas & nonnas & abuelitas of the world-famous Bubbie Brigade, and then kindling the lights of the larger-than-life People’s Menorah outside the ADL Headquarters. Together, we will recommit ourselves to working to dismantle all forms of white supremacy, including anti-Black racism, anti-Palestinian racism, Islamophobia, antisemitism and xenophobia.

We are at a crossroads. Down one path, we are told, lies safety for an ever-shrinking few — through white nationalism in the US and ethno-nationalism in Israel/Palestine, with more walls, guns and cops.

Down the other path, our movement ancestors call us: Towards safety built through solidarity. Towards collective liberation. None of us are free until all of us are free.

Let’s count the number of things wrong with this – besides the abject Israel hate, of course

  • This event was held well after Hanukkah was already over – there is no ninth day of Hanukkah
  • On Hanukah, Jews do not light a Menorah. We light a Hanukiah
  • Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Were the events of Hanukah taking place today, JVP would be at the forefront of decrying them (actually, Jews in groups like JVP are very much like the Hellenists of that time).
This reminds me of the so-called “liberation seders” of fellow anti-Israel group IfNotNow – co-opting Hanukkah, like Passover, is one of the most ridiculous things they could do, given the significance and symbolism of these holidays.

The only fitting thing about this sham of an event was its location – a church! Which sums up just how Jewish they really are.
