The Adelaide Festival continues to feel the heat over the inclusion of unrepentant antisemites Susan Abulhawa and Mohammed El-Kurd, with another major sponsor, the Adelaide Advertiser, set to withdraw its sponsorship, following in the footsteps of law firm MinterEllison. Not only that, but their editor issued a very strong denunciation of the antisemitic views of Abulhawa and El-Kurd, and called for Festival director Louise Adler to resign.
“All aspects of the Advertiser’s relationship with the Adelaide festival are under review. The advertiser has publicly called for writers week director Louise Adler to resign. The views of the two writers in question are repugnant,” Adelaide Advertiser editor Gemma Jones said in a statement read out by Markson.
You can see Gemma Jones’ full statement, followed by a discussion of Susan Abulhawa and Mohammed El-Kurd’s antisemitism, here.
I would just point out that while the discussion was good and included some of their most egregious examples of antisemitism, it would have been helpful to have also mentioned some of the more obvious antisemitic tropes, including examples that ostensibly have nothing to do with Israel and more to do with the Jews as a whole:
