A Plea to My Fellow Israel Advocates: Leave The Fake News Sharing to Our Adversaries

The grotesque speech of Jonathan Glazer at the Oscars was not the only display of anti-Israel virtue signaling at the Oscars. Celebrities like Billie Eilish, Ramy Youssef and the always antisemitic Mark Ruffalo wore red pins in support of a group called Artists4Ceasefire.

Many Israel advocates and even the New York Post have claimed the origin of the symbol on the pin – which looks like a red hand – is the Ramallah lynching of 2000.

The Hollywood left loves a good, old-fashioned Jew-lynching: Just ask Mark Ruffalo, Billie Eilish and Ava DuVernay.

All those boldface names were among the stars sporting “bloody hand of resistance” pins at the Oscars.

The pins show a raised, red open palm and are marketed under the ultra-chic “Artists for Cease-Fire” label.

But that symbol derives from an actual photo of a bloody hand.

Back in 2000, two Jewish IDF reservists mistakenly drove through Ramallah and were detained by Palestinian police — and then brutally murdered in their jail cell by a crowd of savage, blood-hungry thugs, one of whom showed his bloodied hand in a now-infamous photo.

That is, like so much of American “advocacy” for Palestinians, the pins are a wink-wink, nudge-nudge endorsement of violent terror against Jews

While I think these celebrities are absolutely wrong in calling for a ceasefire, the claim that the red pin symbol derives from the Ramallah lynching is not based in fact.

Artists4Ceasefire explain the symbol as such:

The Artists4Ceasefire enamel pin is composed of a red background to symbolize the urgency of the call to save lives. The orange hand conveys the beautiful community of people from all backgrounds that have come together in support of centering our shared humanity. The heart being cradled in the center of the hand is an invitation for us to lead with our hearts, always, to lead with love. When we lead with love, we understand that all of our fellow beings deserve to be loved and protected.

True, the pin design is reminiscent of the bloodied hands, and pointing that out as an irony is absolutely valid and useful. But to state as fact something that is based on resemblance alone – and does not seem logical – is an own goal.

In this day and age of online activism with copious amounts of information entering everyone’s social media feeds, it behooves pro-Israel activists to be extra careful in vetting their sources and verifying the information that comes their way before sharing as fact. We are dealing with an enemy who regularly claim we are the ones lying; a classic case of projection given their modus operandi is to spread anything and everything potentially damaging to us, either knowing it is false, or without checking its accuracy. We need to be extra vigilant and not gift them the opportunity to attack our credibility. We do have the facts on our side after all.

For the record, Artists4Ceasefire claim they “lend [their] voices and platforms to amplify the global call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the safe return of all hostages, and the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilians in Gaza.” This is classic virtue signaling, because although they mention “the safe return of all hostages”, a permanent ceasefire with Hamas still intact will only ultimately lead to them trying to perpetrate more October 7s in the future. Not only that, but when they speak of the safe return of all hostages, one cannot help but feel they are including palestinian terrorists in Israeli prisons, who the haters also commonly label as such.
