Melbourne Barber Stone and Blade Stands Up to Antisemitism

Back in August, I exposed Katrina Ann Smith, the owner of Juniper Salon in Melbourne who refused to cut the hair on an Israeli. She was subsequently evicted and closed down her business.

But this post isn’t about her. It is about another Melbourne hair salon that did the right thing.

The following message was posted in a private Jewish Facebook group:

Hi everyone,

I’m Ari, the co-owner of Stone and Blade, a barber in Caulfield.

Recently, a former staff member made antisemitic comments to a customer. These remarks were completely unacceptable and absolutely do not reflect the values of our team or our shop. The individual was terminated immediately.

The Jewish community has always been at the heart of who we are at Stone & Blade. From day one, you’ve welcomed us, supported us, and made us feel like part of the family. My team and I have a deep love and respect for this community – we simply wouldn’t be where we are without you.

At a time when antisemitism feels more present than ever, I want to make it clear that we stand with you, always. Hate has no place in our shop or anywhere in our society.

Thank you for your trust, kindness, and unwavering support. It truly means more to me and my team than words can express.

With gratitude,

Ari and the Stone & Blade team

For those who might be thinking this is purely damage control, take note they actually terminated the employee. They did not make them “undergo cultural sensitivity training” or the like that we see all too often. Also their message seems really sincere.

Then there’s the fact that one of the owners has the name Mehdi, which might indicate he is Muslim. If so, that would put even more pressure on him from within his community to tow the anti-Israel and even antisemitic line. Yet comments by Jewish customers are overwhelmingly postive of the salon and its owners, with one stating “Never felt more comfortable and welcomed in any business.”

A look at their Instagram profiles show they have a fair few celebrity footballers as clients, so I am guessing they would do fine with or without Jewish customers. Besides, these days it is almost easier to tow the anti-Israel line – especially if you want to attract young customers.

Just like I am keen to expose the bad guys, I also feel it important to applaud and encourage the good guys of the world. So well done, Stone and Blade. You’re a cut above.
