Miss Israel Calls Out Fake “Side-Eye” Video Shared by Miss Palestine

Miss Israel Melanie Shiraz has reacted to the side-eye controversy, and, in my eyes, she nailed it:

The truth always speaks for itself.

Here is a side-by-side of nearly the same pose.
It shows how easily perspective can distort a simple expression when only one angle is circulated.

Sensationalizing intentionally misleading, edited, or incomplete content at the expense of another woman is disappointing— from the public, the media, and even from Israeli outlets that should uphold higher standards. Especially when it takes moments to fact-check. And especially when there are real stories, real crises, and real human beings whose voices deserve attention far more than a manufactured narrative about a glance.

This platform is meant to empower women. Using it to tear women down, sharing images without consent, and staying silent while a fellow competitor is attacked all undermine what we are meant to represent. Private photography or content capture during official events is also not permitted under competition guidelines, and respecting those rules matters. As representatives of countries in conflict, we have a responsibility to model dignity, peace, and hope — not pettiness, hatred, or deepening divides.

That a few-second moment became international news speaks for itself. The hatred and dehumanization that followed— including Hitler-related comments and a heightened security situation, over a brief, ordinary expression— reflect far more about the world than they do about me. It was hard to cope with at first, but it only reinforces exactly why I am here: to stand proudly as a Jewish Israeli woman, and to advocate for truth, peace, and unity.

And it only motivates me more.

Note the blink-and-you-miss-it “and staying silent while a fellow competitor is attacked all undermine what we are meant to represent.” Miss Israel seems to be referring to her fellow contestants.

As for Nadeen Ayoub, she (or someone else who runs the Miss Palestine account) actually shared the doctored footage to make Melanie look bad:

The dubious footage was soon posted to Miss Palestine’s social media alongside the Sia song “Unstoppable,” with comments like “Israel looking at the REAL QUEEN” and “What’s going on with Pinky Pinky at the back?” ripping Shiraz’s supposed side eye.

The video was elevated to a near-international incident by celebs such as Israel-hating Bella Hadid, who reposted the doctored footage from Ayoub’s post. The “clipped” imagery was deployed with “the aim to make me look bad and create a narrative of jealousy,” said Shiraz.

Ayoub didn’t return a request for comment.

Meanwhile, Melanie’s class is shining through in other ways.

And really, that’s the whole story in a nutshell: one contestant rises above the noise with class, clarity, and dignity – the other amplifies doctored drama and then goes silent when asked to explain it.

Whatever the judges decide on stage, the real winner (and loser) here is obvious.
